.A/N: Sorry, I don’t know what happened to my last chapter…I tried to fix it before leaving for Thanksgiving break, and couldn’t log in. Thankfully that’s fixed now, and so is my last chapter. Hopefully I’ll have number 8 up by the end of the week; however, finals are coming up, and I can’t guarantee anything. OH YEAH and my e-mail was wrong before, but I’ve fixed it, so if you e-mailed me and wondered why I never wrote back…that’s why…okay sorry! Done now!!
.Disclaimer: Now I like to make these…but I think I’m done with them…It says it in every chapter before this, and you have to go through those to get here. So for the last time…YYH isn’t mine. ~_^
.Chapter 7: Gone Again
The rest of dinner goes by in relative peace. There are no big arguments just a few squabbles between Yusuke and Kuwabara which seem pretty routine. A lot of questions are thrown your way, where you’re from, how long until you’re do, that sort of thing, which you answer happily, and attempt to keep up on the other conversations. At one point Yusuke asks you if Hiei was worth the three-month burden, and before you could even open your mouth to respond, Keiko had laid into him so badly, you wondered if his cheek was permanently that new shade of red. Hiei seems particularly annoyed at this line of questioning, but it is Kurama who suggests they steer clear of it. He does not realize how grateful you are for that.
When everyone is finished, Shizuru takes her plate into the kitchen, and leaves for work. You smile and say goodbye, to which she gives into the urge to ruffle your hair, and walks out the door, shaking her head and lighting a cigarette. You stand up to help the other girls clean the table, though it kind of bothers you how that worked out. You tell Genkai to sit, that you’ll take care of it. The cook should never have to clean. Botan apologized profusely, but said she had things to discuss with the boys.
In the kitchen, you catch Keiko eyeing you curiously. "Yes?" you ask, trying to tame the quirk your lips were pulling into. You already have a pretty good idea what is on her mind.
Keiko blushes. "Did you really…I mean with Hiei…" she stammers, and then blushes more.
"Yes," you answer trying not to snicker. It seems your actions are unusual here in the human world as well.
"But he’s so scary," she whispers, and quite frankly you agree. Still, scary or not, he means something to you. It’s a question you’ve been asking yourself a lot lately.
"Hiei?" Yukina asks. Her bright red eyes hold confusion as if it were water, something real and liquid, filling them up completely. You wonder if she showed every emotion she had like that. Keiko nodds. "But he seems so sweet."
That catches your attention. Hiei, sweet? Hiei was many things- fierce, hungry, cold and hot at the same time. He was many contradictions…but sweet to his bitter? Was there a side of Hiei you’d never seen? You glance over your shoulder at the dining room. His face is stoic as he’s listening to whatever Botan is talking about, and you wonder…then he looks up and sees you watching.
That face, those lips, the soft darkness of his hair. Will these breed true in your children? Those crimson eyes…eyes? You look at Yukina, who is discussing healing now with Keiko, they seem to have moved on without you, and pay very close attention to details. She has the aqua hair of ice apparitions, but her eyes…they are wider, and the way they hold emotion is nothing like Hiei. But there’s something about those eyes. You glance back in the dining room to find Hiei still watching you, though almost as soon as you turn, he drives his attention back to Botan. You wonder if maybe he knew what you were thinking. The thought is enough to speed your pulse.
"_______________(your name) are you alright?" Keiko asks.
"Huh?"
"You’re shaking." You look down at your hands and sure enough, they are trembling lightly.
"I’m…I’m sorry, but I think I need to go lie down."
They nod in understanding, and you’re pretty sure they’ve chalked it up to your "condition". It’s just as well. You don’t really feel like being social, you have some mental food to chew on.
*~*~*~*
Hiei does not come to you that night, not that you really expected him to, but a small part of you had hoped… When you wake up in the morning there is a great deal of commotion in the temple. You slide into the sweatpants Kurama loaned you without a thought to your new clothes, and a T-shirt, snatching up a brush on the way out. Combing your hair as you walk, you scent the air- agitation, excitement, annoyance, curiosity, and urgency. When you finally enter the living room you can pinpoint the source of each scent individually. (A/N: Who can guess which emotion belongs to which Tentai?)
The Reikai Tentai, as you’ve learned they are called, are gathered with Botan, preparing to be off on a new mission. Hiei is perched in the windowsill, glaring out, but you can see his reflection watch you as you enter. Genkai looks up and motions you towards her. She’s sitting at the coffee table, gracefully handling her cup. You smile and sit beside her, though part of your brain is telling you to go to Hiei. He’s right there!
You gratefully take a cup of tea for yourself and halfway listen to Botan giving out her final instructions. Kurama smiles at you and you smile back. You feel immensely grateful for his company this past week. You’re starting to think of him like a second brother. And there’s no question that he’s helped take better care of you than Hiei. You’ll be sad to see him go, and meeting his eyes now you let him see it. He gives you a reassuring smile as Botan finishes, and then stands to go.
As the group files out, you notice Hiei watching you. "Onna, come here."
You frown. "You’re already standing, why don’t you come here?" you demand, rubbing your tummy for emphasis. His eyes narrow in irritation, then slide to Genkai.
Genkai makes an amused noise before standing, "I was just getting up." then she walks out of the room. Hiei glares after her for a moment before crossing towards you.
"Those are men’s clothes," he says gruffly. You stare down at yourself, realizing what you’re wearing and then shrug.
"Kurama gave them to me."
"Why is Kurama giving you his clothes?" Hiei asks, appalled.
You sigh, easing yourself to your feet. "Probably because my leather pants, the only pair I own, are too small."
"Hn…you went shopping yesterday?" You start to respond, but are suddenly caught up wondering how he knew about that. Could he really have asked about you? Or maybe come looking for you? And you weren’t here! "You should wear your own clothes now," he continues, "You don’t need these." He seems to think a moment before adding. "I’ll be gone for maybe a week."
He doesn’t say he’ll see you when he gets back, he just turns and walks out before you can even think of a reply. The fact that he’d deemed it important to tell you at all tugged at your curiosity, but you knew better than to ask. Still, it’s not like he’s been here to go away. Genkai touches your shoulder lightly, and when you turn to her she has a knowing look on her face.
"Hiei will be fine," she tells you. "Kurama too."
You grin slyly, "What makes you think I’m worried about those two."
Genkai shakes her head and stands. "Yusuke might be a dimwit, but he’s got talent. And Kuwabara…well he’s got heart. Now come on, we’re going to work on some meditation now."
You hop up, making a mental note to look up the word ‘dimwit’ in Genkai’s dictionary later on. If she’s going to keep saying it, you ought to know. You walked through the high walled temple, your bare feet slapping at the cool stone beneath you, and your mind a pleasant buzz of white noise. It was a sort of letting go of all thoughts that Genkai had taught you to do before meditating. You loved the way your body seemed to relax into it, and release all the excess baggage you carried. You were no longer an expecting mother, a submissive wolf, or an unwanted mate. You were you, whatever that meant, and even without the answer it felt fine.
Genkai is already seated, cross-legged, hands resting lightly-palm up on her knees, facing out into the forest. You sit carefully beside her. It’s funny how careful you’ve been lately. Perhaps if you’d been careful before…no you wouldn’t think of that. You recede back into your white noise. Peace.
"Today I thought we’d try something a little different," Genkai tells you. "I’m going to guide your meditation as usual, but this time we’ll be giving your ki a little trail run."
"What do you mean?" you ask her.
"You’ll see," is her vague reply.
With a shrug you assume your meditation position, mimicking Genkai’s. You relax your shoulders while still pulling your spine into a straight line, and begin taking deep even breaths in and out. You feel the way each breath slides across your tongue, down your throat, spilling into your lungs. As you breathe out you focus on the steady contracting of your lungs; the slow diminishing and outward push as the air twirls out evenly through your mouth and nose. You are so focused that you almost don’t hear Genkai’s voice. It’s far away as she slowly speaks:
"Visualize a tree. I want you to pay close attention to every detail about that tree, each branch, each bright green leaf. Now visualize the bark, focus on it, the color…the texture…focus…"
You build this tree as she speaks on the backs of your eyelids. It starts out small, one thin trunk, three or four cragged branches, and while she talks to you, you build upon it. First, filling in the trunk until it wide and proud. Next, more branches, some larger, some smaller, spaced evenly around her. Finally, and this takes the most work, you begin to add leaves. In your mind you see fall colors and so you dye each leaf: red, yellow, plum purple. You’re so lost in meditation, that Genkai’s voice falls away.
"________(your name)!" Your name holds the tone of being repeated for the third, or more, time.
"Yes," you reply, and your voice feels as if it’s being pulled from somewhere deep inside you, where every sound has an echo.
"Open your eyes."
You do as you’re bid, and for a moment, you are frozen. The tree, exactly as you saw it in your mind, full and life-like, stand before you. Everything about it is real, down to the texture, and the way it sways lightly in the breeze. You gaze at it, wondering how you managed such a spectacular feat, and as you think, you reach out to touch one of its leaves. The image shatters at your touch, scattering form and color into the air as if it never existed.
"What happened?" you ask, spinning to face Genkai. She is standing beside you, hands clasped behind her back, smiling in an approving sort of way.
"That, was a manifestation of your ki. Now that I have a better idea of what you’re capable of, lets try again."
