Chapter Seven
Kurama turned around in his chair as Koenma came into the room, shutting the door behind him. He put a finger up to his mouth to indicate that Koenma still needed to be quiet. He finished his call up with one of the people they were trying to close a deal with before giving his full attention to the Prince of Spirit World.
"How can I help you Prince Koenma?" Kurama questioned up as he sat the phone back down.
"Not making me wait would be a start, Kurama," Koenma said with a peeved expression.
"Forgive me. I was finishing up a business call. Without the business running smoothly I would not have the financial means by which to continue the investigation you assigned me to," Kurama explained.
Koenma shifted from one foot to the other at the look in Kurama's eyes. He was silently reprimanding him about interfering with his human world business when the Prince had already asked him for one favor, that much Koenma knew. The young man would never be so impolite to put it into words. He definitely wasn't Yusuke.
"Did you have any business down here?" Kurama brought back up as he motioned for Koenma to have a seat in front of him.
Koenma pulled out the chair and sat down in it. He cleared his throat as he stared at his former employee; though that term was debatable as he hadn't really given Kurama that much of a choice about it. It had either been work off his 'debt' to Spirit World or be put into Jail. Considering that the committee would have taken all his crimes as Youko Kurama into consideration before announcing his sentence there was no doubt that he wouldn't have been released until his human life had come to an end or even later than that.
"I just wanted to check in on what you've found out about that company," Koenma said in the most business like voice he could summon.
Kurama leaned backwards in his chair. "Not much yet I'm afraid. I expect I will take a lot longer for this inspection than you are used to for the straight cases."
"Can't you speed it up?"
The redhead shook his head with that calm expression still in place. "If I attempted to speed up the process it would seem ingenuous and the agent they assigned to me would get suspicious."
"Of you?" Koenma seemed surprised. "I mean...come on Kurama...we both know that you're the best at deceit!"
Kurama knew that was supposed to be a compliment, however at this point he wished it wasn't supposed to be. He was good at deceiving and misdirecting people. He was good at infiltration as well even if he hadn't had to use those skills for some years. After how long he'd taken to attain them, Kurama doubted he would have lost his touch after only two decades and some odd years. There was also the fact that he was keeping up on his practice without actually takinganything just to make sure he never got too rusty. But he wasn't exactly going to tell Koenma that.
"She's quite observational," Kurama said with a respectful smile.
Koenma let out a long breath. "Coming from you, Kurama, that almost worries me."
Kurama's smile turned comforting as he leaned forward. "Don't worry Koenma. I told you I would take this on as a favor to you and I don't intend to fail. In fact, I anticipate that she will call today. From there we will set up another meeting. It won't be too long until I learn something that can be researched."
"I hope you're right," Koenma said, wishing that he had his pacifier.
With a nod, the redhead stood up. He moved between Koenma and the door with a subtle 'ready to go?' type of pause as he stared back at the Spirit World Prince. Koenma stood up and nodded as though to reassure himself of something.
"Please keep me informed, Kurama."
"Of course," Kurama accepted.
Though Koenma wouldn't have seen it, Kurama's eyes stilled in concentration as he opened the door. Funny, he thought that you would have called his office to make plans. He never expected for you to show up this early on. And it was certainly not in his or Spirit World's best interest if you ended up running into Koenma this early on. For all the good points that Koenma had, stealth and subtlety weren't exactly among them.
Which was why he was mildly relieved when Koenma had already gotten out of sight before he saw you. In your hands was a large looking purse. Though judging by the look of the fabric and the scent drifting out of it, Kurama would have to say that it was an insulated lunch bag.
You held it up once you got within normal conversation distance. "I was told that this is about the time that you take lunch."
"It is," you heard Shuuichi agree. "I take it you brought lunch?"
You nodded and walked into his office when he motioned. Once inside, Shuuichi closed the door behind you and loosened the tie around his neck. You could see his suit jacket hanging on a small stand hanger in the corner of the modest office. His desk curved around a good portion of the room with multiple, matching filing and storage cabinets on the wall behind. To the side was a sliding window which he had closed off.
You waited as Shuuichi cleared off, by way of organizing, the desk facing the door to the office before you sat the lunch down. You pulled out the water bottle container first and the tall, hard plastic cups. You pulled the silverware and napkins out of the cups, laying them out in the right order just as easily as people breathed. As you worked, Shuuichi watched from the end of the desk.
Then you brought out various different containers. They all matched, of course, because there were some things that you got picky on. Everything matching tended to be one of your quirks.
"What inspired you to do bring lunch?
.
You smiled as you pulled the lid off of the largest, flattest container. Inside was small steamed oysters.
"Well, you took me out to lunch so I thought I'd repay you. And since you have a habit of working over the weekend too, I figured a weekday was as good as any other day."
The look on his face was guilty as charged but that didn't disturb you. You had met many men who were hard workers. Probably about just as many as those who didn't work at all. Once everything was laid out, though you didn't take the lids off of the other parts of the meal just yet, Shuuichi took his seat. You followed suit.
As the appetizer of oysters got under the way, Shuuichi was the first one to speak up. You had learned that waiting for someone else to talk was the best way to gauge what was considered an appropriate conversation.
"How did you find out about when I take my lunch?"
"I called your assistant."
He looked surprised and you smiled like a cheshire cat at that expression, though you tried to hide it behind a sip of water. It was no wonder that he was surprised, really, considering that you had only been in Japan for two weeks. Prior to those two weeks you knew none of the language so to call up a Japanese company and find out something personal was surprising.
"Don't worry, I'm good but not that good. I cheated a little," you explained after setting your drink back down.
"How so?"
"I used an app to translate but I did memorize my questions with the help of a lot of different text books."
He looked at you in interest. "So you're learning to speak Japanese then?"
You nodded modestly as you opened the purposefully cold tomato based soup for both yourself and Shuuichi. "I know a lot of languages. Japanese isn't one of them. But I am learning how to speak Japanese."
"You're doing very well," Shuuichi said.
"Thank you," you replied after a moment of hesitation.
Once the soup was done you moved all the empty dishes back into the lunchpail in the shape a purse. Then it was onto the main dish. The rice was richly colored and filled with vegetables; shopping for everything was the most interesting thing yesterday.
"Did you prepare this?"
"Yes. It's called Paelia Valenciana," was your answer before you switched back over to English. "I learned how to make all of this while I was in Spain. Have you ever been there?"
"Unfortunately I have been busy with school, family life, and now running this section of the business," he answered.
You nodded understandingly. The way he phrased that, however, made it seem like he could have been there prior to all of that. Somehow you couldn't rule that out.
"Was that the last place you were at?"
Now, you knew you weren't going to tell him anything about your past jobs. You tended to view that as somehow immoral despite the fact that worse could be done. Not to mention you had found out that if you let it, it tended to become the only point of conversation. People were always curious about the kind of things you did - sometimes in a morbid, jealousy provoking sort of way. But the way he phrased this question felt safer. It was more about the location than any one person.
"I was there for a while. I'd actually just gotten off of the plane and to my apartment building when we ran into each other," you told him as you poured him a refill of water.
"Where were you before that?"
"Before Spain? Hmm...Brasil."
It actually took you a minute to think about that. It was always hard to remember the exact location once you left. Something to do with the hypnosis that the company employed once you were done. You had learned not to ask too many questions, really, because there were far too many pros about this job to ever want to lose it. You traveled in interesting places, met a lot of different people, learned new things till your heart was content, and got paid to do all of that. Given the pay was after your living costs had been calculated in, it was still a nice sum at the end of the month. More than you would ever need to spend.
"So a lot of spanish countries then?"
"I never thought about it that way, but yeah I suppose so. What about you? I know that you haven't been to Spain but what about other countries?" You brought up in a mild tone, moving the conversation back before it turned over to what you did in those countries.
"I'm afraid that my passport is without stamps," Shuuichi answered smoothly, though in a slightly self-deprecating tone.
That was an odd way of putting it. Effective but also evasive. So either he was just playful or he was avoiding the answer for legal reasons. If it was the later rather than the former that made him one of the best sneaks and liars that you had ever met considering that his extensive background check had come up squeeky clean.
"There are a lot of interesting places within Japan to visit. Have you been to any of them?"
Shuuichi nodded. "A few of them yes, but not as many as I would like."
"Any favorites?" This way you could figure out what his favorite sort of places were.
"Recently some friends and I inherited a place up in the mountains. I go there when I am able to take a day or two off to help remind me of why I enjoy this life."
You smiled. That sounded like a nice thing to do.
"If the others agree, maybe I could show you soon," Shuuichi said with a smile.
"Don't worry about it. I don't want you to feel forced or intrude."
His smile turned more amused. "Don't worry, the moment I feel backed into the corner you will know. I have a habit of showing my teeth."
You smiled and laughed a little, though you knew the statement could be serious. Especially from what you had seen with how he moved so far. Confidence radiated from him in a silent shroud and the way he placed his hands and feet were smooth. Not in the same 'I'm in charge' here type smooth but the kind that had an restrained strength. Plus the way that all the clothes you had seen him wear sat on his shoulders you would say he had a rather developed upper body strength.
"So when I see gleaming white, I should probably turn tail and run then huh?"
"You can, but it won't help," he teased back, though in a much more subdued tone than your own.
"Oh?"
"I have ways to take people down without taking a step," he answered as his amused smile turned wry.
Somehow you were starting to believe that. Which meant that you were going to have to be extra careful with him. After all, some things never really showed up in people's records. At least not on their legal ones.
