Moshi wake arimasen! (I have no excuse for myself!) Please, enjoy!
***
They had been walking for hours, following the narrow passage hidden behind a portrait of Kurai’s father. The corridor smelled of disuse and abandonment, and the walls were coated with a thick layer of moss.
Yusuke kicked at a particularly bold rat and called out to their leader. "Hey! You wouldn’t happen to be leading us into a trap, would you?"
Zei glanced back. "Why would I do that?" Yusuke waited for him to explain, then sighed as he realized that no more information was forthcoming. With a groan, the detective resigned himself to his fate and resumed trudging after the other two.
"It is unwise to annoy him, Yusuke," Hiei mused, his arms folded. Though the passage wound ever upward, Hiei had no problem with balance and didn’t have to touch the mossy wall at all. "He is the only one that can lead us to Kurama."
"Yeah..." Yusuke wiped his hands on his pants. "But couldn’t he have picked a cleaner shortcut?"
"I’m sorry that I haven’t done much maintenance," Zei called. "I haven’t had to use this tunnel since my attempted escape."
"What do you mean?" Yusuke asked, trying to avoid touching the disgusting walls.
"Haven’t you wondered why I am going against my master’s wishes?" The demon stopped, turning to face the others. "I was once in the same predicament as your friend."
He fell silent, then turned and resumed his walk. The other two mused over what he had said, but didn’t prompt him to continue. They didn’t have to; he did it of his own accord: "Yato had gone to work for Kurai. I, however, was thought too weak to be an effective fighter. I chose to stay out of the ring. Yato told the prince of me, however, and he came searching for the insolent one who wouldn’t bow down to his ‘superiority’." This last word was said with a sneer. "He used me, much in the same way that he is using your friend. He gleans power from sex. It was months before he was comfortable enough to lengthen my chain and let me leave the room."
Zei paused, pressed his hand to a moss-free section of the wall, shook his head, and continued walking. "I used the power that I had left to carve this tunnel. I left the stone at both ends, however, so that no one could see it. Then, one day when Kurai had gone patrolling, I slipped into this passage by moving the stones aside. The chain would only react if I went down the hall; when I entered my passage, it became befuddled and snapped apar wou would have gotten away scot-free if it wasn’t for Yato."
"What is Yato’s place in this?" Hiei queried. "You mentioned him before. What does he have to do with you?"
Zei chuckled and touched his hair softly. "Can’t you tell? He is my brother."
Yusuke’s mouth formed a little ‘o’ of surprise. "You mean we’ve been following the brother of that perverted bastard? I knew we shouldn’t have trusted you! I-"
"Shut up," Hiei snapped. "If he had wanted to kill us, he would have done so long ago. Continue your tale, demon."
Zei nodded. "Yato caught me trying to sneak away, but instead of helping his flesh and blood escape, he betrayed me. He turned me in to Kurai and was promoted to head of defense. The only thing that spared my life was Kurai’s fascination with cleverness. He never found my passage, but he admired the fact that I’d found a way to escape. I became his advisor, and I hated every moment of it. If you can defeat him-" He turned to Hiei and Yusuke, a thirst for vengeance in his expression. "-I’ll be freed."
Hiei scoffed. "Hn. A noble cause, helping others for your own gain."
Zei just smiled. "Two more floors to go."

Kurai swept down the hall, tugging on his white robes until they lay perfectly against his body. He then tended to his hair, which had fallen from its normal neat ponytail during his escapade with Kurama. He loosened the tie and let his navy blue hair fall before sweeping it back up with practiced fingers.
His path was leading him directly toward the lowest of his sentinels. With a smirk, he imagined the look of frozen terror on the faces of the rescuers, Hiei and Yusuke, as they lay in pools of scarlet-
He paused, his footfalls ending abruptly. Hanashi, his first and weakest sentinel, was sitting on the botttairtair, his chin in his palms. He looked... bored.
"Hanashi."
The demon leapt to his feet and fell into an awkward sort of bow. "Prince Kurai," he acknowledged.
"Was the defeat of the outsiders so simple that you felt the urge to sit here doing nothing?"
Hanashi blinked. "My Prince, I have seen no outsiders. No one has passed me since I’ve been here."
Kurai’s eyes widened a fraction. "Impossible. When I left them, they were but a few halls away from your location. They had nowhere else to go!"
"With all due respect, they couldn’t have passed me without my notice, sire. I saw no one."
But Kurai was no longer listening. Hanashi wisely fell silent as the prince turned on his heel and started up the stairway, seeking out his second sentinel.
Bokuko was in an even worse state than Hanashi had been. He was lying on his back on the ground, asleep and snoring. Without bothering to wake him up, Kurai stepped over him, absently slaying him with a backward motion of his hand. "Useless..."
Kurai found the same situation at the post of his next sentinel. Though he hadn’t been asleep, he had been infinitely bored and had also claimed that he had seen no intruders.
After passing his third sentinel, Kurai paused in the middle of the staircase and leose ose a frustrated growl. "Zei," he summoned, looking around for his advisor. "Zei." He called a little louder, then frowned. He could feel his presence, but for some reason, the demon was ignoring him.
Before he could bellow out another call, Kurai paused. Zei’s energy signal was faint, very faint, but it was clearly very close, coming from... the wall? Kurai turned to face said wall, then became aware that he felt three distinct energies...
"Well, well, well... He has betrayed me." Kurai pressed his hand to the smooth, cool stone. "So be it. He will die along with the trespassers." Summoning his strength, he channeled his energy through his palm...

Zei paused, causing Yusuke to run right into him. "Oi! What the hell did you stop for?"
"Kurai is calling for me. He had noticed your apparent disappearance, I’m sure of it."
Hiei glanced over at the wall that faced the adjacent hallway. "Is he able to sense us in here?"
Zei bit his lip. "I’m not sure. I haven’t used this passage while fully energized... and never with companions of your power level. We should just keep walking; we’re almost-"
He cut off as a tremor rocked their little passageway. A high-pitched whistle sounded through the room, then a thin beam of energy rocketed through the wall-
-and through Zei’s chest.
The demon couldn’t even choke out a cry before he was hurled into the wall opposite, blood already matting his front. His eyes were wide and vacant.
"Zei!" Yusuke started toward him, but he was deterred from his path when the wall from which the attack had issued crumbled into a fine powder, revealing an irate prince on the other side.
"Well, well. It appears that I have underestimated you two." Kurai raised his arm over his head as if preparing for an attack. "I will not make the same mistake twice."
Hiei’s hand grasped the hilt of his sword tightly, but he knew that there was no way that he could maneuver in the way that he needed inside the narrow passage. Both he and Yusuke tensed, preparing themselves for Kurai’s inevitable attack.
