Book 4 - Chapter 3

Chapter 3

“Harder Hiei!”

Amaya was laughing as she and Hiei sparred, katanas singing as they hit, blade on blade. Hiei could tell she had felt better that day, definitely wanting to get some energy out.

“HaHa. Come on Hiei, more!”

She jumped up into the trees, jumping to the end of the bare branch and launched herself at him. He caught her, arms around her waist as they fell, swords falling away from them as they rolled, both having to catch their breath.

“You’re going to end up killing me if you keep doing that, ‘Maya.”

She silenced him with a kiss, surprising him completely. He didn’t mind it actually, she had been playful before, even though she was sometimes rough. He had missed that.

She pulled away suddenly from their play and looked up, searching around her like something was familiar. She was still for a moment, her knees resting on each side of Hiei’s, her body alert and eyes trained on the horizon.

“Amaya…”

She took off at the sound of her name. It was so fast Hiei hadn’t registered it until a second after she ran.

“~Damn it~”

He got up and followed her, hearing her crash through the trees as she ran, her screams lending aid as to where she was. He followed the pained screams, not understanding what had set her off.

“No, please, stop, don’t hurt her. Don’t hurt Mother!”

Hiei pulled up at the words. Amaya had never spoke of her mother.

“No stop! PLEASE! NO!”

He ran faster, taking to the trees to find her, unable to locate her now but trying to follow the screams.

“AMAYA!”

He heard an ear-piercing scream as he found her by the edge of what looked to be a long ago burnt-out shack on the edge of the woods, charred remains that had long been there.

She sat on the ground, sobbing uncontrollably and rocking back and forth. Hiei walked up to her, trying to think of soothing words that wouldn’t set her off. He was cautious, slowly kneeling down to her, placing a hand on her shoulder. She didn’t even look up as he spoke, his voice void of concern by sheer force of will.

“Amaya. Tell me what’s going on in your head.”

She was silent for a few moments, tears running down her face. When she finally spoke she looked up at him, eyes again clear of the insanity.

“I hear them in my head, fighting. They don’t stop. They just fight. I can’t make them stop. I want them to stop. I remember. He hurt her. I stabbed him.”

She went silent, tears welling up again. “I died here. This is where I died.”

Hiei looked at the burnt out hovel, his mind racing.

“He killed my mother. I…I tried to save her, but it was too late, he had slit her throat. I died from the smoke and the fire.”

“Who killed her, Amaya. Maybe it will help us cure you.”

She turned to him, eyes red from crying. “He’s dead too. I killed him. The man I called father.”
