Yusuke slid
off of Puu’s broad feathered back as gently as he could with the still
unconscious Jin in his arms. On the
outside he was still, forcing him self not to fidget like he wanted so badly to
do. “Please stay with Jin.” Touya has asked, while he and the rest of the
small group got ready to leave in search of the stolen newborn. “Take
him somewhere safe, where the Shinobi won’t think or dare to go. Once they find out Jin survived they will
stop at nothing to kill him.” Touya
had probably meant the territory Yusuke had inherited from his late ancestor
Raizen, which was swarming with monks who had dedicated their lives to the
demon lord. Yusuke had stopped there
momentarily to bark out orders for search parties and a brief recap of the day’s
events. He didn’t notice how most, if
not all, of the demon monks weren’t very surprised to find that Jin had been
carrying their lord’s future heir. All
the while Yusuke was with the monks he never once put Jin down, though many had
offered to relieve their lord of him so the unconscious demon could be laid in
a bed to recuperate, Yusuke refused adamantly.
Not even a quarter than an hour later Puu was back in the sky headed for
the one place Yusuke knew his friend would be safe.
By the time
Yusuke had arrived at Genkai’s temple
Jin had developed a high
fever. He was sweating profusely and
shivering so violently that his teeth would occasionally chatter. Kurama, the brilliant fox that he was, had
apparently given the old physic a heads up for she and Kuwabara were waiting
out side her temple when the two demons arrived. Genkai instantly ordered Jin taken to
Yusuke’s bedroom and stripped of this sweat soaked clothing. Kuwabara was instructed to rummage though
Yusuke’s duffel bag for a pair of clean sweat pants. By the time Genkai entered the room with an
arm full of hot water bottles; the two men had Jin in a fresh pair of pants and
covered with three blankets. No one
spoke until the old woman had placed all of the water bottles in strategic places
under the blankets to help Jin warm up faster.
“How bad is
it?” Kuwabara asked his deep voice soft
and low, he had seen the bandages that covered the expanse of Jin’s muscular mid
torso all the way down to his hips.
“Bad.” Yusuke sighed. “The doc who stitched him together said there
is a chance that he is so scared that he will probably never be able to carry
children again.”
“How much
of a ‘probably’ is he talking about?”
“Ninety-nine percent.
Give or take a percent.”
“That
percent means a lot.” Genkai
replied. Yusuke started when he noticed
that the old woman was in the doorway.
He hadn’t noticed that she had left.
The young demon didn’t reply to his old mentor as she knelt next to the
shivering wind master with a cloth in a bowl of ice water.
“He has one
hell of a fever.” She muttered wringing
out the cloth and draping it across Jin’s forehead. “I’m not sure what his normal body
temperature should be but I don’t want to chance bringing Yukina up here. In her state she might do more Jin more harm
than good.”
Yusuke,
only half listening, nodded. Yukina,
being so petite and was reveled to be carrying twins, was showing very early on
in her pregnancy. She was noticeably
pregnant to any one giving her the slightest glance. Yusuke agreed that having the pregnant
demoness around after Jin lost his baby would be very hard on the wind master.
“Do you
want me to call and see what she suggests?”
Kuwabara asked.
“I know
what she would suggest and already have a kettle heating to make it.” The old woman looked at her former student,
who she could tell was giving himself one hell of a guilt trip for every reason
under the sun.
“Yusuke,” she called to him
getting his full attention. “Did the
doctor give you any thing for his fever?”
Yusuke shook
his head, his loose unjelled bangs swaying with his movements, before returning
his concerned gaze back to the unconscious Jin.
“Just a pain killer.
He didn’t have a fever when we left that place.”
“Then I’ll
brew up some broth with the herb and give that to him, but I don’t think he
should have any of the pain killers until he gets something solid in his
stomach. He hasn’t has any food since at
least last night from what Kurama said-“
“Days.” Yusuke spoke
up. “He hasn’t eaten since at least the
morning day before yesterday. Touya had
breakfast with him and then left. Jin
didn’t eat dinner with him that night or anything yesterday when Chu
and Rinku were there. But Touya said
that’s normal when someone goes into labor.”
“I wouldn’t
know personally,”
Genkai mused. “But, that
does make sense.”
When the
kettle in the kitchen started whistling both Kuwabara and Genkai excused themselves leaving Yusuke alone with the sleeping Jin.
Sometime
later Genkai and Yusuke had more or less poured a cup and a half of Genkai’s
herbal broth down Jin’s throat. The
redheaded wind master has stopped shivering for the most part and his fever had
dropped slightly, he was still rather pale though. Even though Jin was visibly recuperating,
Yusuke, on the other hand, was starting to grow tired and jumpy. Every sound startled him sending him racing
to the window searching for any sign of his friends or perhaps some pointed
hood of a caped Shinobi. Hours later and
still no news from any one, Yusuke started to think that something terrible had
happened. He remembered his fight with
Jin and the rest of his rogue Shinobi group who had entered the tournament, how
Kurama warned him to be extremely cautious and Hiei warned him that as a
Shinobi Jin had much experience. Now
Touya had led that small group of his and Jin’s friends into a known Shinobi
stronghold, well, a strong hold well known by Shinobi that was probably teeming
with strong, impeccably trained demons.
He had sent some of the monks to join the small group, but the young
demon was dying to get into the action himself and kick some Shinobi ass.
A sudden, soft groan
started Yusuke out of his thoughts.
.~*~.
Jin
groaned, trying to turn away from the soft evening light streaming though the
window. His head felt like it was about
to explode from the sound and vibrations of his own voice. He felt as if he had the worse hangover of
his life, a hang over that stretched from his head straight down to his toes
and settling with a sharp, miserable ache in his gut. Wait a second, wasn’t he in labor? Was that the pain he felt in his gut? No, there was something he wasn’t remembering
his head so miserably muddled that he could hardly put any thoughts together. A familiar voice was calling Jin’s name
softly, but even that soft alto voice sent dagger like pains shooting thought
the wind master’s skull. Squeezing his
eyes tightly shut, Jin tried to force back the involuntary tears that formed
from the sheer sharpness of the piercing pain that shot though this head. Against his own will, another groan sounded
through his throat which started the whole downhill slope all over again. Who ever thought up this torture was a
sadistically brilliant son of a bitch.
.~*~.
Yusuke watched
helplessly as his friend slowly regained consciousness through a haze of
agony. Calling to him softly, Yusuke
brushed Jin’s crayon red hair out of his face and tucked it behind a normally
shaped ear. He watched as Jin winced at
the sounds and gentle touches. Grabbing
the small bottle of pills that the doctor had given him Yusuke fought with the
child proof top, he was warned that these pills were extremely heavy duty and
that if taken on an empty stomach could make the patient violently ill. It was one extreme or another, Yusuke realized
and Jin was getting nowhere wallowing in agony.
When he started feeling better, then they could work on getting food in
his stomach, for now all the young demon could focus
on was getting his one time lover out of pain.
As he was fumbling with the bottle, his fingers growing clumsy in their
hastiness, a glass of water was thrust into his hand. Looking up, Yusuke looked into the calm,
concerned eyes of Kuwabara. The
redheaded physic didn’t say a word as he reached down and undid the top of the
bottle. He placed a large, slightly
calloused hand on his best friend’s shoulder with a firm supportive squeeze
before retreating out of the room. Jin and
Kuwabara got along just fine the few times they were actually together,
however, the young man knew that at a time like this Jin didn’t need his
unfamiliar presence, nor did he need to feel crowded.
Gently
cupping Jin’s neck and shoulders, Yusuke gathered the wind master in his arms
and cradled his head in the crook of his shoulder. A soft, breathy moan of protest was all Jin
could muster at his gentle handling. With
a firm push, Yusuke pressed two of the pain pills in between Jin’s thin, paler
than normal lips. The wind master’s
hands came up, one started rubbing his forehead and the other pushed feebly
against the arm that was now holding up a cup of water for him to sip to help
the pills down.
“C’on Jin,
just a sip to help those pills go down.”
Jin complied, tilting his head slightly to sip the water. The cool liquid felt like pure silk running
down his parched, aching throat and suddenly Jin realized how thirsty he was. When Yusuke was about to take the cup away,
Jin’s hand came up to stop him. Slowly,
Jin sipped at the water until his stomach had all it could take at the moment. The pain was hardly dissipating and his eyes
were still tightly shut against the soft evening light.
“Why don’t
you go ahead and lay back down till those pills start to work?” Yusuke suggested, gently coxing Jin to lie
back down onto the sleeping mat.
“No.” His voice was no more than a breathy whisper
with hardly any sound to it. Jin didn’t want to lie back down. He felt completely helpless and that scared
him. Pain was something he was used
to. Being a fighter and a Shinobi master
to boot, meant a lot of super intense training and ton of wounds, broken bones
and from time to time a concussion. The
pain given from training or battling was nothing compared to the pain that
clutched the wind master’s body in a vice.
When working against the pain, endorphins would be released through out
his body and at the same time would jumpstart the healing process. Plus the
adrenaline would give too much of a rush to even notice the pain. At the moment, Jin was weak as a kitten with
nothing to distract him from deep piercing pain that seemed to touch his very
core.
Most
everything, but the pain, was forgotten in moments. Jin’s head felt heavy, too heavy for his neck
and seemed to pull his hunched body toward the floor. Yusuke had been surprised when Jin was able
to sit on his own, but soon realized that his former lover wasn’t going to be
able to for long. Wrapping a warm
blanket snugly around Jin’s shoulders Yusuke gathered his back into his strong
arms. Jin couldn’t tell how long he lay
against Yusuke’s wonderfully warm chest, but he knew when the pain killers
started kicking in, because as the pain started lessening a
nauseousness started building in his stomach. Slowly, his mind also started clearing
up. After a while he was able to open
his eyes and look about. The room was unfamiliar
but the scent that filled it was anything but.
“Where am
I?” Jin croaked, his scratchy throat
leaving him hoarse.
“Genkai’s temple.”
Yusuke answered. “Ningenkai.”
Jin
digested that for a moment, his eyes scanning the room momentarily before he
fumbled and fought to release his arms from the warm blanket he was wrapped in. Pushing the soft fabric down Jin looked at
his stomach seeing the bandages and deflated stomach where his baby once slept.
“Where’s
m’baby?!” Jin demanded, already guessing
at the answer yet still scanning the room again before those fever bright eyes
fixed firmly on Yusuke’s large brown.
“We don’t
know.” Yusuke answered, in a soft
forlorn voice. “Touya and the others are
searching for it right now.”
That
answered another question, wither the Shinobi who took him had killed Touya or
not.
“The hell are we still doin ‘ere?
Le’s go!” Jin said, struggling to
get his wobbly legs to work. Yusuke
braced Jin as best he could while the redheaded demon in his arms determinedly
struggled to get out of his grasp. Had
Jin feverous brain been thinking straight he would have tried to get up slowly,
as he was still half hung over with drugs with a miserable nauseous feeling
building in his nearly empty stomach, the only thing his mind allowed him to
focus on was the panic that settled deep in his gut. As Jin fought to stand his unsteady legs gave
out, pitching the wind master forward. Lunging
forward Yusuke caught Jin before the demon had a chance to hit the ground by
wrapping his strong arms around Jin’s waist unintentionally jarring his freshly
stitched wound. Another cold sweat
broke out over Jin’s clammy skin as a searing hot pain spread through his whole
body causing his knees to buckle.
Yusuke
slowly lowered Jin onto the rumpled nest of blankets, gushing apologies
practically in tears from causing his friend so much pain. Jin trembled and heaved, letting his dark
haired friend gather him tenderly against his warm chest.
“Jin,” Yusuke murmured
softly after a few moments, once Jin stopped heaving though his pain was not
soon to go away from the feel of it.
“Those bastards butchered you up pretty bad, being warded, drugged and
at the tail end of a pregnancy doesn’t help much either. You’re not going to be able to come and help
the search, at least not yet.”
“Canna jus’ stay here!”
Jin argued around more heaves, each bringing more pain then the last.
“I know
you’re not going to like staying here, Jin.”
Yusuke admitted visibly upset, yet his voice was firm. “But, you’re not strong enough to help us
search. You’ll only succeed in getting
yourself kidnapped or killed or worse.
And I’ll be dammed if I got you out of one hell to let you get caught up
in another!”
Jin was
quiet for a moment, his resentment clearly defined on his face. His brain must have been clearing because
after a moment the wind master consented, his expression softening a tad.
“I git ya.” Jin
murmured as he started, slowly this time, to stand. “ ‘Elp m’to da loo,
then git yer arse outta ‘ere and find m’baby.”
It was slow
progress helping Jin find his legs with an even slower shuffle to the bathroom
to follow. By the time the pair made it
back there was a plate of lamb and rice waiting for them. At the smell of food, the nauseousness that
had been plaguing Jin disappeared for a ravenous hunger to take over. It was then Jin realized that he hadn’t eaten
in days.
“Ba-san and
Kuwabara are gonna be around incase you need something.” Yusuke informed Jin as he helped him back
down onto the sleeping mat and hand over the plate of food. “Feel free to ask for anything; your not here
for training this time so you’re gonna see a whole another side of the old
lady.”
Jin nodded
looking up from his food straight into Yusuke’s large brown eyes. “Get outta ‘ere. Go git m’baby back.”
Yusuke nodded,
his features set with determination. “I
will find our baby.” He promised before pressing
a quick kiss on the forehead surprising both of them. Jin’s fever bright eyes
widened as followed Yusuke’s back rush out of the room. So Yusuke knew that the baby was his. Did that mean that the Shinobi knew now
too? If they did that surely meant a
death sentence for the tiny life Jin had cherished carrying. Looking down at the plate of food in his lap
Jin realized that he lost his appetite.
Picking up the chopsticks Jin forced himself to start eating as years of
survival training kicked in. While it
did some good convincing Jin to eat it also brought back hordes of memories the
redheaded demon was hoping to forget.
The Shinobi would do what they deemed necessary and one push in the
wrong direction could very well convince them that his baby would too much
trouble for them to be kept alive.
Yusuke hadn’t mentioned just how many of their friends, possibly allies
as well, he had searching for their baby.
Their numbers seemed so small compared to the numbers Jin knew the
Shinobi had at their disposal.
And yet. . ..
Jin knew
the determined look in Yusuke’s eyes very well.
That boy didn’t know the meaning of the word defeat. He would find their baby or die trying. Jin’s trust in Yusuke knew no bounds, but his
knowledge of the Shinobi and their skills knew no boundaries either. Jin thoughts were torn between the one demon in
all the worlds who’s pure strength and energizing spirit simply oozed out of
ever pore of his body and had drawn him like a moth to a flame, who’s
friendship had given him the some of the most rewarding experiences of his
life, including giving him a baby, and the demons who had trained him since
before he could stand, sculpted his powers into what they considered perfection
and ultimately turned him into the demon he was today. Neither side knew what they were up against and only one could come out on top; both sides wouldn’t have
it any other way. And here he was, his
child torn from him as a gutted fish of its innards and as weak as said fish
with nothing left to grasp onto but hope . . .
But the
question was. . .
Could he
dare to hope?
