Chapter 8
Once Acquainted
Miki watched the snow fall outside and smiled. “I’ve been changing…”
“Oh?” Yukina said as she wrote something in her notebook. She just loved the medical ventures of Miki and felt
it necessary to keep track of every change from human to vampire. “What is it now?” she asked.
Miki looked to Yukina and smiled. “Since that time I nearly froze on Valentines Day…I’ve been feeling a new resistance
to the cold.” He returned his gaze to the outside and smiled when he saw Hiei’s shadow appear in the old oak on
the edge of the forest.
Yukina began to write again and stopped. “Thank you so much! I love learning new things…” she said cheerfully
before leaving the room.

Hiei sighed and crossed his arms he knew Miki had feelings for Yusuke. “I’m just a guardian…nothing more…”
he thought and prepared to do his usual ‘faster than the human eye’ dash when Botan popped up in front of him in her
usual annoying way. “Hello Hiei!” she said cheerfully.
Hiei brandished his sword and glared at the pretty messenger of death “what now?” he hissed.
Botan giggled and glided back a few feet “I have a surprise for Miki!”
It had been a month since their mission and Hiei was a bit stressed at what kind of surprise Botan could have
that didn’t involve traveling to demon world. “Spill it woman.” He cursed.
Botan blew a kiss tauntingly at Hiei and smiled “Do you remember Jina Gerhard?”
“Who…?” Hiei was now utterly irritated.
Botan straightened her face and continued not wanting to be cut in two by the Koorime. “…the little girl Miki killed.”
Hiei’s eyes went wide. “Why the hell is this idiot bringing her up?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While Botan distracted Hiei, Miki lay in his bed and looked at his hands. “…claws…no claws.” He said as he played
around with his constantly evolving body, making his fingernails grow to the length of the average youkai’s
and retracting them like a cat.
“That’s cool!” came an oddly familiar voice.
Miki sat up quickly and looked around his eyes setting upon a small girl sitting on an oar that if stood on end
would have been taller than her. She dressed in a cute yellow kimono with orange Koi embroidered along the bottom
seam; her obi was a pale blue. She hovered a few inches over the floor and smiled at him. “Do I know you?” Miki
searched his mind for a familiar face to match hers to.
“It’s me Miki…Jina…Jina Gerhard.” She announced and hopped down her eyes were bright and hopeful.
Miki was stunned “J-Jina?”
“Yep!” she nodded happily.
Miki trembled; he didn’t know what to do. “I…I killed you…” he stammered and fell to his knees.
Jina blinked her large brown eyes seeing the sadness forming in Miki’s eyes. “Don’t cry!” she moved forward
and hugged him the same way she did in the moments that she passed. “It’s ok…You needed the blood.”
“But…I’m a…”
“Don’t say it Miki.” Jina comforted Miki and smiled. “It doesn’t matter I’m happy now. I have a job and friends…and
Botan is like the big sister I never had.” She broke the hug and butted Miki with the flat of her oar. “Don’t be sad ok?”
Miki smiled a little and wiped away his tears. “Hiei had to erase a lot of memories after those people saw
you in my arms like that.” he laughed a little.
“I bet!” Jina laughed as well.
Miki couldn’t help but smile after Jina left and his mind trailed off to other things. An image of Yusuke entered
his mind thumbing his nose before sparring with Hiei or Kurama, and he couldn’t help uttering a yelp as he tried to
bury his pining thoughts of the raven haired half demon.
After a good two hours of chastising himself he got up and went outside for a walk and noticed Jina was talking
to Hiei. “I wonder what their saying?” he asked himself as he made his way down the 100 steps to the path that
lead to the bus stop. It was good to have an umbrella for daily activities. It had two linings the outer
lining was white and it reflected the sun, the inner lining was black and it kept the excess light from pouring down.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As Miki waited for the bus to the city, Hiei had a decent chat with Jina. “You’re smaller than I remember.” He said
trying to make conversation as Botan left them together.
“Weird huh…?” Jina asked and lifted her arms in her kimono.
Hiei grunted and looked away.
“I bet you want to know why I bothered to come here?” she asked.
Hiei didn’t falter. “obviously.” He huffed.
“I wanted to make peace with Miki-San. After all he’s the one who gave me my new life.” She stated before disappearing
in a similar fashion to Botan.
“…eh…?” Hiei didn’t confuse easily but today he was thoroughly confused.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Miki got off the bus not knowing where he was going and he saw a familiar face outside of a bridal boutique. It was
the girl from the card shop who gave him the puzzle box for free. He couldn’t help but be drawn to her this second
time…maybe he could return the kindness.
“Oh Shizuru” Keiko cooed as she gestured at a beautiful gown. “If only I could afford it.”
The woman called Shizuru smirked. “Well with the three jobs you have you can afford that one there.” she pointed at
a very tacky and very under priced wedding dress.
“I don’t even want to know why the price is so low.” Keiko pouted.
“Um…Excuse me…” Miki said overhearing their conversation.
“What do you want?” Shizuru growled and leaned over Miki in an ‘I can and will beat you up’ kind of way.
“Eep…Shizuru no! He’s a friend of Yusuke’s!”
Miki blinked “They know…Yusuke?” then he remembered something. Yusuke had been putting off the wedding
because of costs and Keiko…that’s right! Keiko was a cute brunette. Miki felt sick inside having met the woman this
way and the blood left his face.
“Hey are you ok kid?” Shizuru grabbed Miki’s chin and pulled him up for a good look. “You’re really pale.”
Miki shook Shizuru’s hand away. “I’m fine.” He lied and looked down as his eyes flashed red. He regained control only
to turn and run away. “This feeling…I didn’t have it when I didn’t know who she was.” He remembered Valentines
Day. He growled deep in his throat and fled into a dark alley.
“That was weird.” Shizuru said.
Keiko shook her head. “No it’s not; He’s a vampire Yusuke won’t stop talking about him saying things like… ‘We got
a vampire on our team! We’ll teach him how to do this and that, and so on and so forth.’” She laughed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Miki crouched down in the back of the dark alley with his umbrella as a shield. “How can I hate someone so passionately?”
he asked himself as his claws formed and as his fangs loosed he bit his lip. He began to cry as he felt his rage grow…
“I want him to look at me the way he looks at her.” He whimpered as his eyes went red. “It hurts…” he cried and he
dug his claws into his legs drawing blood. “I will not kill…I-I won’t kill…” he muttered in a soft mantra which seemed to
work as long as his claws were an inch deep in his own flesh.
Hiei became worried after searching the temple grounds for Miki and coming up empty handed. “Where are you?”
he asked inside himself as he removed his bandanna and opened his Jagan. He followed some chaotic thoughts that
he identified as Miki’s and thanked the boy silently for opening his mind for him. It wasn’t long before he
found Miki’s umbrella open and tipped up in a protective way on the ground. Hiei approached and moved the
umbrella to find Miki rocking in place with his head between his knees and a pool of blood around him. “Miki…?”
As soon as Miki withdrew his hands from the wounds he had inflicted on himself he lost all control ferally lunging
at Hiei with tears in his eyes and fangs dropped. He bit down hard raking his fangs along Hiei’s neck.
Hiei didn’t stop him he only thought one thing as Miki attempted to drink him dry occasionally coughing as his
throat was burned by the hot blood. “What happened to you?” he wrapped his arms around Miki and closed his eyes
trusting that the boy would make the right choice.
Miki was startled as he felt Hiei’s embrace. It took everything inside him to cool his rage and his eyes became
their original bright blue. Miki pulled away and looked down at Hiei.
Hiei’s neck was ravaged and his scarf was soaked in hot blood. He lay still his arms now heavy his embrace breaking.
“Hiei…” Miki cried his eyes took on a violet hue, and He began to lick Hiei’s wound closed. “…Hiei…don’t die.”
He shook as his tears flowed down his cheeks. He clung to the fire demon and cried. “Don’t leave me.”
((Smiles everyone! *looks at the last paragraph* oh my... *blinks* maybe i should say Frowns?))
Hiei: you're killing me off? (growls)
J_Jade: (nervous laugh) heh heh you just have to read the next chapter...
