Sha landed back on the beach not long after she left her apartment in the city of Severa. She pulled her black hair over her shoulder as her wings shrank back into her shoulder blades. She adjusted her pack and started back up to the house. As she approached, she wasn’t expecting wonderful smells coming from the back porch, or the music coming from outdoor speakers. She leaned around a large bush, seeing Salem cooking outside. “Well well, what is this? You’re a chef as well as a hunter?”
Salem tilted his beer bottle to her. “Have to learn a few things when living on your own.” He gestured to a large table next to him with eight chairs. A cooler sat on the wood of the deck beside it. “Drop your things off upstairs, grab a drink, and settle in. You’re the first one of your squad back. Yusuke went out for some more booze.”
She nodded. “Alright. Switching up the order of that though.” She took a beer out of the cooler and went inside the house. One look into the kitchen let her know exactly what type of night it was to be. She shook her head and took a drag from the bottle before wandering upstairs and to the right. She bumped into someone as she rounded the small corner to her temporary room. “Oh, sorry.”
Hiei sidestepped out of the way. “Thought you were more graceful than that.”
“Typically, yes.” She held up her bottle. “After a few more of these I won’t be. Due to my height and weight, it won’t take much.” She stood two inches shorter than him, and given her ability to fly, she wouldn’t weigh much as it was.
“Given what they’ve laid out already, you’ll have all sorts of things to fuck yourself up with.”
“Will you be joining us?”
“Don’t see a point.”
She scoffed. “I see. So sulking by yourself is a wonderful alternative.”
He curled his lip. “I don’t need people around me right now.”
“No, but it’s a nice distraction.”
“Like you know.”
“I do, actually.” She adjusted the strap to her duffel. “I know your life is none of my business. I don’t care what happened to you anyway. But from experience of losing someone, being on your own is not a good thing. You’re allowed to immerse yourself in a few pleasant indulgences right now.”
“People aren’t pleasant.”
“Sober, I’ll agree with you. But given that spread down there, even Sukuna becomes easy to tolerate.” She curled her lip. “And I usually can’t stand her.” She shook her head. “How about this? Stick it out, see how you feel when you’re drunk. If they’re still intolerable, find me and I’ll fight with you again.”
“And if they are?”
She gave a small smirk. “We’ll see if that happens.” She opened the door to her room and tossed the bag unceremoniously inside. “If you still feel bloodlust, I’ll oblige you.”
“I could interpret that one of two ways.”
She almost froze as she realized what she had indicated. Bloodlust to demons came in both violence and in sex.
“Though I know you mean fighting.”
Two could play at his game. “We’ll have to see how the evening plays out, won’t we?” She closed the door behind her. She couldn’t read him any longer, but his aura became heavy around her.
“I suppose so.” He shrugged as she started back down the hall with him. “Fine. I see no harm in poisoning my liver right now.”
“That’s better. A poisoned liver makes everything more tolerable.”
“You’ll most likely get along with one of the others coming in tonight.”
She tilted the bottle back to her lips before descending the stairs behind him. “Mm, oh yeah. Who do they have coming out? I may recognize names from files.”
He looked back at her. “Did you read up about everyone Yusuke worked with?”
She shook her head. “Not all. Mostly just the case files. I wanted to be sure I knew what was going on. I also read into Sensui and Kuroko’s files, if it helps ease your mind.”
They entered the kitchen so he could procure some of the alcohol behind the bar, diving straight into the hard stuff. “From what I understand, a few of Yusuke’s old fighting companions are joining us.” He ticked them off his fingers. “Chu, Jin, Toya, Rinku, Shishi, and Suzuka.”
She nodded, recognizing the names. “I’m familiar with them. A little boisterous for my taste.”
As she tipped her bottle back again, Salem came inside. “Oh, great. I need a bit of help.” He pointed to the fridge. “Sha, in the fridge behind you, there’s a few plates of food waiting to be cooked up. Could you grab that while I chop up stuff?”
She nodded. “I know my way around a fire pit, actually. I can start cooking if you like.”
“Sure, it’s already seasoned up. The grill’s heated and ready to go. That’s a huge help, actually.”
She took the plates outside, and the last thing they saw of her was her tail vanishing around the archway. Salem looked to the bar as Hiei continued to pour his drink into a glass. “So, she’s nice.”
“Don’t even try.”
Salem scoffed as he opened the fridge back up for vegetables. “What? Just making an observation.”
“And I know where the observation is leading. Stop while you’re ahead.”
He set the vegetables on the counter, getting his cutting board and knife ready. “I’m not anywhere.” He cut into a tomato. “I hear she’s great with swords, though. Not surprising given her history. I mean, shit, hunting down an assassin? That takes balls even in our world.”
“I see Hyogua talks a lot.”
“I was curious on who I was letting into my house. Especially someone with a reputation for being so ruthless in her kills.” He set aside the slices he had made and reached for another tomato. “Hyouga said she never showed mercy while they were out. Made a fortune off of some of the things they stole, too. Lost it all when she went into hiding.”
“Wouldn’t be wise to look for anything elaborate if you want to be forgotten.”
“Exactly. She’s smart, thinks two to three steps ahead of anything she does. It’s how she was able to elude the SDF for over twenty years.”
“If you find her so fascinating why don’t you date her?”
“Because I’d rather not date someone who could potentially kill me during sex.” He shrugged. “Call me weak, but I prefer a little romance in the sheets, not blood.”
“Nothing wrong with bloodying the sheets here and there.”
Salem hid a smirk. “From what I’ve been told, it’s Sha’s idea of a good time. She’ll only sleep with someone that can actually hurt her. Violence first for foreplay.”
“It means she hasn’t been corrupted by this human way of life. Or weakened by anything.”
“That’s the kicker. She is weak.”
He looked at him, unwilling to admit his curiosity had been piqued. “What do you mean?”
“Well, to what she could be. Dragons are strong creatures, even those who have been able to take humanoid shape over the last few thousand years. However, they can only breed strong offspring with another dragon.” He reached for a head of lettuce, knowing he had started sowing the seeds of interest. “As it turns out, Lord Haraguroi had a love that was not a dragon, but a fire elemental. He sired a child with her, which was the only thing that kept the elemental alive.” He watched his friend tip his drink back and set the glass down empty. “Once Haraguroi’s child was born, they killed the elemental without his knowledge. After that, he became so protective of the kid, they couldn’t do the same to her. They had to let her age a bit.”
“And?”
“Well, Sha’s technically a runt. It’s why she’s so small. Dragons are tall. Even their females can get up to six feet tall.” He shook his head. “That’s all Hyouga would tell me. She said the rest was Sha’s secrets alone.”
“Sounds like all of that should have been kept secret.”
He saw from the corner of his eye as he filled the glass again halfway with amber liquid. “Probably. But like I said, I wanted to know who I was letting into my home. Didn’t want to wake up with a sword in my neck.”
“Not her style, I’d think.”
“No. She counterattacks. She doesn’t seek it out.” He reached into one of his overhead cabinets for bowls for the vegetables. “Kinda curious if she’s still like she was when she was in her prime.”
“Most likely.”
“I mean, I’ve heard she was fast. Could gut you before you even knew you were beaten.”
“Salem, seriously.” Salem looked up. He saw Hiei’s grip on both the liquor bottle and glass had increased. “I know what you’re doing. I’m not interested in moving on right now. Especially to someone I’ve just met. I know you’re making her seem more appealing to me.”
“Can’t say you aren’t interested.”
“It isn’t the right time.” He filled his empty glass once more and stood, taking the bottle with him. “Between us, I appreciate the fact you’re trying. But it isn’t for me.”
Salem frowned. “What isn’t?”
“Happiness.” He tilted the glass back and left it empty on the counter. Without another word he left out the back door.
The demonic sun was setting off in the distance, forcing him to take shelter under the jutting portion of the second story, where Salem had placed his outdoor table. He saw Sha immersed in her work, a second bottle in her hand. He only knew it was second due to the empty one on the smaller table next to her. Her reptilian tail swayed back and forth as she rocked to the music, slightly singing along. She finished her current bottle and frowned to it.
Without a thought he reached into the cooler and procured another one for her, holding it out to her. “Running low?”
“Ah, yes. Just what I need.” She twisted off the cap and tossed it onto the table next to the empty bottles. She drank from the bottle until she needed air. “Did Salem rope you into something as well?”
“Not exactly.” He held up his bottle. “But I scored a prize while I was in there.”
“Share and I will for sure owe you later.”
He couldn’t stop his chuckle as he handed her the bottle. “I thought you only needed a few drinks to get drunk.”
“Exactly. I hate social gatherings.” She tipped the bottle back, taking the equivalent of a shot.
“Then why rope me in?” He took the bottle back as she handed it to him.
“I need someone to suffer with me.” She turned her attention back to the grill. “Besides, what would we do instead? Stay in our rooms out of sight? Scour the shoreline for flat ground to fight on?”
He hummed in amusement as he watched her drink from her beer bottle again. “You seem interested in a rematch with me.”
She pointed her tongs at him. “I slipped.” She lifted her black shirt to show him the wound. “I haven’t been hit in ages.”
“Wish I could say the opposite for me.” He pulled from the liquor bottle again, feeling hazy. “Not enough people want to fight anymore.”
She rolled her eyes and groaned. “I know! What is it with them?”
“Probably saving their energy for the tournament coming up in a few months.”
“If they have to save it up, they’re not strong to begin with.”
He arched an amused brow as she reached for his bottle again. “Am I to take it you would participate?”
“If I wasn’t on probation.” She tipped the liquor bottle back again before handing it over. “I wanted to try, but of course Yama put his massive foot down.” She sent a glare to the sky. “I wouldn’t have gotten to the end, I know that, but just participating would be enjoyable. It’s been forever since I’ve been able to see what I can really do.”
“Not hard to believe.” He put the bottle down, knowing he needed to pace himself from then on. “Foes that you and I need to face, they’re few and far between. And those that are, aren’t willing to put up a good fight. Something either weakens them, or scares them off.”
She pointed at him. “Exactly.” A slur started to show itself in her voice. “In the missions I’ve had with becoming one of Yama’s new detectives, all the demons I’ve faced down pussied out as soon as they heard my name.” She faced him, her arms outspread. “I mean, look at me! I’m practically a fucking dwarf and they cower.”
He snorted despite himself. “To be fair, the only other name feared more in the ruthless category apart from you is Mukuro.”
“And I hear she hasn’t lifted a finger herself in over two years now.” She scoffed. “No offense, but your ex-girlfriend isn’t as terrifying as she once was.” She frowned at her beer bottle. “Though that could be the liquor talking.”
“I won’t argue your point.” He found himself getting up to stand next to her, watching her work. “News from the inside is that she has no fuel for her old fire anymore.”
“Shame. She was actually a good role model for me for a while.” She flipped some of the pieces of meat on the grill to char the other side. “I mean, gods, the things she did in her prime. All with her hands bound. I strived to be like her.”
“Is that so?”
She didn’t seem bothered by how close he was. “Yes. I mean, when you’re hunting down an assassin, you have to get creative in how you procure your information. And when they refused to give up sources, or you couldn’t leave survivors, the best way to do it was with a bloodbath.” She glanced at him with her charcoal eyes. “Yet you don’t seem off-put by my passion for the kill.”
“Let’s just say that I’ve done my fair share of reveling in that copper scent. I know the high it can put you on. And you are nowhere near as passionate about blood and torture as one demon I know.”
“We’ve only scratched the surface.” She caught his gaze. “You really don’t care that I don’t regret what I did in my past?”
“I barely know what you’ve done. You had a reason. No sense regretting your goal.”
She nodded, stepping behind him for the bottle again. “Thanks for not judging me like other people.”
“I’m not here to judge you.” His head was swimming due to the liquor. He hadn’t realized how much he had actually ingested. “Hell, I understand the drive.”
She handed the bottle back to him after taking another shot. “Do you?”
“We’re the rare few that seem to enjoy our bloodlust.” He tilted the bottle to her. “And I can drink to that.”
She grinned and tapped the neck of the liquor bottle with her beer. “To bloodlust then.”
“To bloodlust.” They took their drink and put the bottles to their sides. He almost choked on his. “Sha, you’re on fire.”
“Well Romeo, if that’s how you put it—“
“No, your food.”
She turned around to see the grill had caught fire from fat drippings. “Oh, shit!” They both used their alignment to fire to quell the flames. She laughed at the burned food. “Well, I know what I’m eating.”
He chuckled a bit too. “It isn’t all ruined. Just a few pieces. Don’t worry, I’ll eat the burned ones as well.” He arched a brow. “Did you think I was hitting on you?”
She thought back to what she had said and balked. “Well given circumstances…” She shook her head. “Don’t worry about it. All due to alcohol, right?”
“Exactly.” He saw her get the food off the grill in a hurry. “Don’t think into it.”
“I’m not. Easy mistake to make.”
“Right.”
She found solace in her bottle, feeling her mind grow fuzzy and her body warm against the cooling air.
“How’s that food coming?”
They both jumped at the intruding voice, and Sha spoke a little too loudly. “Almost done!”
Salem came out from the back door. “Great, because everyone’s back. They all showed up pretty much at the same time. Been distracting them for a while.” He put his nose to the air. “Smells great, Sha.”
“Thanks. You can send them all out. I can’t wait to meet them all in person. I only know their names.”
Salem gave a thumbs up and retreated back into the house.
She startled a bit as the liquor bottle was handed to her. “You may need this,” he said. “At least just one more hit.”
She nodded and took the bottle, knocking back just one more. She shook her head. “Alright. Bring them on.”
