I had both Raizen and Yomi help me learn to fight better, though they both had their own unique methods:
[Raizen]
[Rule Number One: Hit Your Target]
Raizen was a highly physical fighter. Don’t get me wrong, he was brilliant, but still preferred getting bloody and dirty over being tactical. The physicality of fighting was an art of sorts, one which he perfected. I cannot say how many nights I came home after honing my abilities with Raizen exhausted, bruised, and bloodied. It was exhilarating though. The first time I managed to land a punch on Raizen (his right cheek), I was reminded of the moment Yomi had first struck me, and I understood, then, his excitement, to an extent. It had to have felt much better for Yomi since he hit me without being able to see me.
Raizen took my hit and raised it a punch to the gut and I fell forward, landing in the dirt. He gave me time to get over the hit, congratulating me on striking him. Pretty soon, both of us were sitting there, laughing about it.
“So what are you going to do now that you hit me?” Raizen asked. I’d told him that hitting him was my first goal.
“I don’t know. Hit you again?”
“Not happening.” We both broke into another fit of laughter.
[Rule Number Two: Watch Your Legs]
I had a bad habit of raising my leg to attempt to hit Raizen in the face. He had an equal habit of grabbing my leg and lifting me off my feet to throw me into whatever was nearby. Rocks, trees, a mountain, a lake, the dirt--I hit it all. Once, Raizen actually had to pry two boulders apart because I’d managed to get thrown between them and got stuck. The lower half of my body hung out toward his end and I could hear him snickering as I felt him place a hand on my ass.
“This is too fucking good to be true.”
“You are a jackass! Are you going to help me or not?”
“I don’t know. The view’s much better now.” He pulled my legs apart, stepped between them and made thrusting motions. “Yeah, I could get used to this.”
“RAIZEN!” I couldn’t tell if I was infuriated or not. But I was laughing anyway.
He pulled the boulders apart and pulled me into a standing position. I slapped him across the face, but I didn’t mean it as much as I wanted to.
[Rule Number Three: Two’s A Duel, Three’s A Brawl, Four Or More Is A Weapon Of Mass Destruction]
Raizen introduced me to some of his friends. Souketsu and Enki stick out more than the others though. While at most I would spar with Raizen and Kokou, this changed as time went on to include the other two. They could keep up with Raizen much better than I could. It was amazing to see. Even if I was ever too tired to fight, I would sit there for some time just watching the others pummel each other.
Aside from fighting, though, Enki was actually quite the gentleman. I wondered how he’d met Raizen often, though I didn’t ask. Souketsu was pretty nice too. He had patience that I had never seen before. At least so long as it didn't pertain to him becoming stronger than Raizen. He was pretty determined to do just that.
The days of training with Raizen were filled not just with fists, but with laughter and friendship. I will always cherish those days.
[Yomi]
Training with Yomi was different than with Raizen in a number of ways. First, it was always one-on-one. Second, Yomi was more focused on tact than an outward brawl. Finally, it was Yomi who got me to experiment with my powers to figure out what I was best at.
[Fighting With My Eyes Closed]
Yomi stopped our spar one day and told me to hold on a moment. Walking toward me, he pulled a cloth from his pocket and wrapped it around my eyes, making it so I couldn’t see a thing.
“Now hit me.”
“I can’t. How am I supposed to do that?”
“Figure it out.”
It took me a long time to be able to do it. Years. But it was just as, if not more, exhilarating finally hitting him as it had been when I first struck Raizen. Then, of course, the game changed, and it took me even longer to learn to properly dodge while blind.
[An Unexpected Gift]
I was able to shoot off blasts of energy like many demons were able to, but they weren’t nearly as powerful as Yomi’s were. And no matter how long I trained, I wasn’t as physically strong as Raizen (even if I could finally keep up with him and hit him here in there). And while fighting Yomi, I certainly learned a lot but I just didn’t feel like his methods were the best for me.
I spent a lot of time by myself, learning to manipulate my energy to form something else. I stumbled upon what would be my personal strength by accident.
I was sparring with Yomi at the time, my eyes covered. I could hear an energy blast heading for me, could feel its heat approaching. But it was too close by that point for me to dodge it. It hit me in the gut and sent me flying backward a fair distance. Whatever air I had left in my body was forced out when my back slammed into a tree hard enough to send it toppling over. The beam continued though, even beyond that, sliding away from my body, finally exploding into the base of a stone pillar.
I could hear Yomi calling my name multiple times as I stood and pulled the blindfold off of my face. It took me a minute to register the urgency in his voice.
“Get out of the way!” he yelled, and that was when I heard the cracking. Spinning around, I saw the stone pillar falling toward me. I didn’t have time to move, and barely had time to shriek and cover my head before it hit the ground.
But it didn’t, not at first at least. It hit something else. A barrier. A white dome of energy surrounded me, protecting me from the stone, which rolled off of the barrier and hit the ground next to me, causing the earth to shake beneath my feet. I think Yomi was just as shocked as I was that I was still in one piece. The energy surrounding me vanished as he came near and grabbed my arms, as if to make sure that I was real.
“You’re okay…” He sounded like he was dazed.
“I’m okay…” I repeated.
He pulled me into a hug, and after a few moments we broke into a fit of nervous laughter.
“Holy shit!” I said into his shoulder. “Holy fucking shit!”
So maybe I wasn’t that great at offense. I ended up gaining a reputation for my defensive abilities. I suppose that had to happen eventually. Nearly dying twice, not to mention sparring with Raizen, his friends, and Yomi, it only makes sense that I would learn to defend myself. After that incident, I worked harder to be able to control my ability to create barriers, eventually being able to modify them. I ended up teaching Yomi how to create a barrier that absorbed demonic energy. It was a powerful trick, but it had a downside: It only worked for demonic energy, not for physical attacks. Still it came to be extremely useful as time went on.
I developed the barriers against physical attacks that were much stronger than the one that had defended me from that pillar. Raizen and Yomi would help me test those barriers out and make sure that they were durable, or as durable as I could make them, I should say. Of course, Raizen would always be able to hit it enough that I wouldn’t have the energy to keep it up for long, but that wasn’t surprising. Hit anything enough times or with enough force and it will fall. My defenses were no exceptions. Despite that, I was proud of myself. Most demons weren’t Raizen or Yomi and didn’t have the ability to reach my limit.
There was one other person in particular who could force me to reach my limits in my defense. But I hadn’t met him yet. It was ironic though. As much as Raizen and Yomi came to loathe each other, there was one particular demon that they hated more, and it would be them that would cause me to come to know and befriend that mutual enemy--Mukuro.
