Chapter 9

Chance of Life

The others sat in the room with Jackie. After Hiei?s mental
breakdown, he had disappeared before anyone could stop him. Who knew what the
fire demon would do?

No one really wanted to stop him.

***

Hiei stood on a mountain top, staring out at the darkening
demon world.

"How could you be so stupid!' he yelled. "If you
wanted to protect someone, you could have done it for our child!"

His fists tightened. His nails bit into his palms. Blood
dripped down, puddling at his feet.

He stared down at his blood. He was the forbidden child. He
was not to love anyone.

Right?

But someone did love him, and he loved her with all his
heart. He would give his life for her?not that he was able to protect them in
the end.

"The toddler did this," Hiei said.

Kurama sat on Jackie's bed while the others stood. Kyo had
brought something up.

"If you knew this was going to happen, why didn't you
stop it?" Yusuke asked harshly. Kyo flinched.

"Is Rachel?not your mother, then?" Botan asked
quietly.

"No, she is. She is going to be brought back?but it's up
to my father to do it," Kyo replied.

The group looked at one another. "It's my father's love
that will save mother," Kyo explained, sighing.

Meggie held onto Seth. "I never knew," she
whispered.

"It's happened in every timeline," Kyo said calmly.

Jackie slowly forced herself to sit up. "Guys, we should
find Hiei before he does something?anything."

"Jackie, just stay laying down. You?ll reopen your
wounds," Kurama soothed. Seth watched his mother.

"Dad, maybe you should stay here with Mom" he said.
Kurama looked to Seth.

"No. Hiei may only listen to me. Seth, you stay here.
The girls, they need someone here to protect them."

"Half of us will looking around, the other half will go
to Koenma to see if Pacifier Breath knows where Hiei or Lyra is hiding
out," Yusuke said as he left the room. Kyo and Meggie looked at one
another.

"I'll go looking for my father, Meggie. You go with
Yusuke to Koenma. Lazan, Kate, you're with me and Kuwabara," Kyo said. The
group nodded and went their ways.

*** Koenma's office***

When Kurama, Meggie, and Yusuke entered Koenma's office, they
found the prince of the underworld being held up by the collar, a sword an inch
away from his neck.

"Hiei!" Kurama exclaimed, moving forward to pull the
angry demon away from Koenma.

"Don't come near me," Hiei hissed. "He knew
this was going to happen."

Koenma gulped as the sword pressed harder into his neck.
Blood dripped from the shallow wound.

"Hiei, I know it's hard. But some things can't be stopped,"
Koenma whispers. Hiei's eyes snapped to Koenma.

"Yes it could have been," he growled.

Kurama and Yusuke quickly grabbed Hiei, pulling him away from
Koenma.

"Hiei, this isn?t going to help Rachel," Kurama
said quickly. Hiei responded by turning the sword on his friend.

"Shut up! It's your damn mate's fault Rachel is dead the
wolf couldn't fight right!" Hiei yelled. Kurama started at him. There
wasn't anything he could say to that.

"Hiei don't take it out on him," Jackie's voice
called from the door way where she limped in. "If you must take it out on
someone, take it out on me. I'm sorry I couldn't do anything. My human form is
not as strong as my demon one, and I can't always control my demon form."

Her eyes stared deep into Hiei's fogged over ones.

"Karasu caught me off guard. I didn't know about his
energy bombs. I don't know what Rachel was thinking when she jumped in the way
of Lyra's sword she ran right though the bombs and blocked it. I don't know why
she did it. If I knew it would happen, I would have pushed her out of the way.'

Jackie and Rachel had been friends back when they were little
kids, but lost touch over time, until they met up with the gang.

"She is a sister to me. Just because she was your mate
doesn't mean you were the only one to love her. I hate it when my family is
hurt because of me," Jackie cried. Hiei's sword dropped down. Kurama moved
to take Jackie into his arms. Meggie stepped forward.

"Father," she whispered. Hiei's eyes went to her.

"She will come back. Because she is my mother."

Koenma cleared his throat and they all looked up at him.

"Yes, there is away to bring her back. Compared to
Yusuke, though, it's going to be harder. There is a door in underworld that
opens only once every 1,000 years. It's able to be opened now. I told her about
its existence, but she doesn't know one thing: doing this means that the baby
she was carrying will not be born. It will not come back to life.'

Hiei's head sunk down further to his chest as he lost some
hope he had just gained.

"Hiei," Koenma said, "you have to talk her
into coming back. Your love is the key to opening the door. If this goes wrong,
her soul could be lost forever. It's up to you and Rachel to get this done."

Hiei looked to Koenma before looking back at his future
daughter. If they didn't try anything, Kyo, Meggie, and whatever other children
they would have would never be born. Or at least, not with Rachel's blood. So
far, he liked Kyo and Meggie the way they were.

It was up to Hiei to bring Rachel back. Jackie shifted in
Kurama's arms.

"Hiei, you love her with all your heart. I can see that,
even though you don't like to show it. I know you would be able to bring her
back," Jackie said, trying to be comforting.

"Father, I know you can do this. Just keep the temper
down," Meggie said lightly as she came to stand in front of her father.
She was about Hiei's height, though Kyo had grown taller, getting most of his
genes from his mother's side of the family.

Hiei looked at Koenma, his eyes sending a cold chill down the
prince's back. "If this is a lie," he threatened, "your blood is
going to cover the ground." Koenma gulped as he backed up a little.

"Hiei, I would not lie to you," Koenma said
quickly. He returned to his desk, looking for something in his papers.

Lyra stared at Karasu as she held something in her arms
hidden within a blanket. "You'd better put this somewhere safe, Karasu, or
it?s your head," Lyra growled as she shifted the bundle.

Karasu made a face. "That is partially mine. I wouldn?t
do something stupid with it," he hissed. Lyra rolled her eyes.

"This is our last chance. If we are unable to get the
spirit detectives under control, I know this will be able to take care of them
in the future," Lyra said as she handed it to Karasu. Karasu looked down
at the bundle.

The gang returned to Genkai's home, minus Hiei. He remained
in Spirit World.

Jackie laid back on her bed. She had told Kurama to go relax
or something, and that she just wanted to be left alone.

Jackie eyed the window. How did things get so messed up? She
had seen her future son and wondered what other children she would have. Her
heartbeat slowed at the thought of never having children with Kurama. What if
she was killed? Or Kurama?

Jackie sat up slightly. Even after Yukina healed her wounds,
some were tender. Karasu watched from a tree. He liked Kurama, but the little
wolf had caught his eye the last time he fought with her. Karasu moved after
Jackie had laid down again. He opened the window slowly and moved inside.

He picked up his prize and left with her.

Seth rested his head in his hand. How did it come to this?
His friends and himself disappearing. Maybe this wouldn?t have happened if he
had never stepped in. If he would have just stayed home. If Lyra had never
raped him.

***

Hiei walked though the cold air of Spirit World. A small
smile came to his lips as he found Rachel sitting on a rock, waiting for him.
She stood up, but she didn't smile.

"I'm sorry, Hiei," Rachel cried, "I really am.
But I couldn't bear to lose my friend that way, right in front of me. I wasn't
thinking right. Now our baby, Kyo?"

Rachel stopped when Hiei held up a hand.

"You would lose the baby in any timeline. It's not Kyo. It's
a baby we never have," he explained, his eyes trained on the ground.

Karasu watched his now nude prize where she lay, chained to a
bed. He looked to Lyra.

"Please let me play with her before you kill her,"
Karasu said, his tone hinting at pleading. Lyra rolled her eyes.

"Whatever." She walked out of the room. Karasu
grinned as he reached out, running his fingers down Jackie?s body.

NOTE: Will Hiei be able to help Rachel find the door? What is
Karasu going to do to Jackie? How will Kurama react? Maybe there will be
lemons. Between who, I don?t know yet. If you guys want two people, just say.
