Jin awoke to a muffled twhump from somewhere in the temple. Instantly awake, he tried to sit up gasping
as the movement sent a sharp pain coursing through his gut. Lying
back, Jin closed his eyes and took a few deep calming breaths before bracing
himself to move again. With trembling
arms Jin slowly pushed himself into a sitting position, breaking out in a fine
sheen of sweat for his efforts. Panting
Jin listened for the cause of the noise that had woken him up. He heard voices from behind the door and
decided to investigate, but first he wanted to find those pills Yusuke had left
for him. He spotted them sitting on the
floor a few feet away from the mat he was sitting on. It was next to a plate filled with food and
two glasses; one was simply water while the other proved to be milk mixed with
herbs that gave it a grayish tint.
Sniffing at the milk, the young demon recognized some of the fragrant
herbs and realized that they were meant to battle his fever.
The food,
Jin discovered, was as filling as it was bland. He had no problem finishing every last
bite. Once finished he stacked the
glasses on his plate and left the room to finally investigate the ever growing
noise outside his room. When his gate
was once quick and bouncy, Jin found he still couldn’t more any faster than a
pained shuffle through the hall. Once he
emerged into the main room of the temple he found the source of the
commotion. Scanning the room quickly,
Jin found a rather sad looking group of around a dozen monks along with, Jin
was surprised to find, Kurama, Shishiwakamaru
and Suzuki among the injured group.
Kurama had one arm in a sort of vine sling, which he had
obviously created himself, with his shoulder cocked at an odd angle signaling
to the ex-Shinobi’s critical eye that the fox had
gotten himself a broken collarbone. To
make up for the lack of his hand, Kurama had enlisted
the help of Kuwabara to patch up a monk’s bleeding
abdomen wound. Considering that the
young physic knew next to nothing about the procedure at hand and was going on Kurama’s instructions alone, they made a pretty good pair
when the pressure was on.
Genkai was kneeling over a grumbling Shishiwakamaru,
who was peppered darts that Jin recognized very well. They were the preferred weapon of a rather
young and very gifted Shinobi. Shishi was in for
hell when those darts were removed and it seemed that someone had enlightened
the oversized imp to this fact, as the tops of the darts were removed yet
sharp, serrated their tips remained firmly embedded in his flesh.
“Let me
take those,” Jin turned surprised to see the blue haired ferry maiden emerge
from the kitchen with a large bundles of bandages and a kettle of bowling
water. It hadn’t taken long for all the
commotion through the portals surrounding Genkai’s
temple to catch the attention of Koenma’s
intelligence group. The demigod’s camera
found the temple just in time to see Yusuke rush off with Puu. Knowing this wasn’t a good sign, Koenma sent Botan down to check
on Genkai and get the gossip. Once she reported to Koenma
just what was happening he granted her unspoken request to stay in Ningenkai to help out as much as she could. Once she dispersed the supplies she had originally
been sent for, Botan relieved Jin of the dirty dishes
he hadn’t realized he was still holding on to.
“Is there
anything I can get for you?” She asked,
her big pink eyes glimmering with emotions that Jin wouldn’t allow himself to
show.
Jin looked
down at his friend laid out on the floor for a moment before he decided to
allow the girl to feel useful, if she was offering to be a ‘go for’ might as
well take her up on it.
“Booze,” He
answered, “Strongest ya got. ‘N oil. None a’dat
smelly junk jus plain oli. Lard’ll work if’n ya ain’t
got none.”
“What do
you need those for?” Suzuki asked, as
Jin carefully lowered himself to kneel next him at Shishi’s
side.
“The booze
is fer you.”
Jin told Shishi, who was also gazing questioningly
up at the red haired demon. “Yer gonna need it fer when them darts be com’in out. The poison used fer
their tips be pretty ‘armless. ‘Cept the burn like
da dickens when oxygen gits
ta them. If’n we use oil ta smother the
wounds they won’t be quite s’bad.”
“Yet still
bad enough for booze?” Shishi grunted, spying the bottles Botan
rushed out of the kitchen with.
“Ya might want somethin’ ta bite down on.”
Jin answered, as Suzuki lifted his friend into a sitting position so he
could down as much alcohol as he could hold.
Feeling a gentle hand on his shoulder, Jin turned to find Kurama next to him.
He and Kuwabara had finished their work
patching up the monk Kuwabara was now helping into
another room to rest.
“We weren’t
able to get any information out of the group we encountered.” Kurama said,
answering Jin’s unasked questions. “They
didn’t know a thing about what was happening to you or your baby. They were, however, under orders to kill both
you and Touya on sight. Once they realized that they were completely
out matched, they retreated. Yusuke and Touya decided to continue their search. Touya is leading
Yusuke, Chu, Rinku and the monks who were not quite so injured to
another stronghold to try and get information.
The rest of us are staying here at least until they return with what knowledge
they had learned.”
Jin nodded
his large sky blue eyes unreadable to the redheaded fox whose gaze followed him
intently. This concerned Kurama greatly, Jin was just like Yusuke when it came to
his large expressive eyes being the windows directly into his soul. He knew as much as Jin that their search was
a long shot, that the Shinobi had years upon years to
create perfection among their ranks and now they were using every last resource
they had to keep Jin and his baby apart.
Wanting to break a bit of the isolating shell Jin had created around
himself, Kurama tried to continue his one sided
conversation until a bellowing scream exploded from Shishiwakamaru. Genkai had just
taken out the first of the poisoned darts. The scream died when Botan poured half the bottle of oil on the puncture
wound.
“Yer doin it
all wrong.” Jin informed Genkai, taking the tweezers from her small, wrinkled hand
the wind master proceeded to carefully remove all the dart heads from Shishi’s body.
!@#$%^&*()
Kurama sat at the top of the temple steps, the ache of his
broken collarbone making rest impossible, he sat in the moonlight waiting for
Yusuke to return. After Shishiwakamaru was relieved of the dart heads Jin made the
imp finish off the rest of the alcohol for good measure then promptly disappeared
back into the bedroom. With growing
concern for both Jin and his missing baby, the fox pulled his cell phone out
once more. After five rings, just when
he was about to give up the call connected.
“Hiei?” Kurama asked
hopefully after a long silent pause.
:Hn.:
“Oh thank
the gods,” Kurama signed.
He had given Hiei a cell phone, on his
returning trip to visit his grumpy little demon after the end of the tournament
rigged the same way his was and able to be reached in the Makai. This happened to be the first time he had actually
gotten Hiei to answer.
:Well?: Hiei snapped. :This thing had been vibrating for the past day because of
you. Say your peace before I incinerate it!:
“Hiei, we need your help.”
:What’s going on now?:
“Did I
happen to tell you that, after the tournament, Jin stayed with Yusuke until he
returned to the Ningenkai?”
:No.: Hiei answered, his tone
flat. :Why
should I care?:
“They
didn’t know it at the time, but at some point they bonded as mates. Jin conceived Yusuke’s child.”
There was
complete silence on the other end of the line while Hiei
digested what he had just heard. Unable
to help himself he barked out a laugh.
:You need help saving Yusuke from his banshee. I’m not interested, fox.:
“Keiko is
the last thing on anyone’s mind, Hiei. Jin was abducted by the Shinobi. They cut Jin’s child out of his womb and left
him to die.” When his words met astonished silence on the other end, Kurama continued, “By sheer luck Yusuke was with me in the Makai when this happened.
We were able to save Jin; however, we lost the baby in the process.”
:Whose we?:
“Yusuke, Touya, Chu,
Rinku and I.”
:Where are you now?:
“Genkai’s temple.”
:Why there?:
“Yusuke
brought Jin here to recover while the rest of us went after the Shinobi who took the baby.”
Kurama explained. We were joined by a group of Yusuke’s
monks. The stronghold Touya led us to didn’t have a clue
about what was happening. They were, however, on orders to kill Touya and Jin on sight.
The wounded came here while those who could went on to continue the
search.”
:You were injured?: Hiei demanded. :How?:
Kurama smiled at the concern lacing his lover’s voice. “It’s nothing I can’t handle. A puncture wound and a broken bone.”
:Do you know who took the baby?:
“She is a
master of Shadows. We aren’t sure how
long she was hidden in the shadows, but I am certin
she was there when Yusuke and I found the baby in what we thought to be an
empty room. She knows that Yusuke is the
baby’s father and that means that it will most likely be killed.”
:She over powered both you and Yusuke?:
“No, Yusuke
left the room. She took me by surprise
and pinned me to the wall.”
:I’ll kill her for that much alone.: Hiei growled. :Tell me what this
bitch looks like. I need to know who or
what I’m searching for.:
!@#$%^&*()
Just as Kruama was finished his conversation with Hiei the fox sensed approaching ki. Instantly on guard, Kurama
rose, inching out of the moonlight to wait out the possible intruders in the
shadows. A tall silhouette limped out
of the trees, moonlight glistening on his bald head. Half carried on his back was another bald
headed demon, whose leg dragged the ground heavily. With a relived sigh, Kurama
approached the group. Within moments
everyone in the temple awoke, sensing their companions, and rushed out of the
temple to help the new round of wounded demons.
The Shinobi group offered no information to Yusuke or any of
the rather pissed off war band. Yusuke’s
reputation as Raizen’s son had preceded him. None of
them wanted to confront the young demon lord so they cooperated. They knew nothing of Jin’s whereabouts or of
where the Shinobi who abducted his baby, her name
turning out to be Illeia, was to deliver it to. When the band went to leave, the Shinobi finally declared that they were to follow their
orders and destroy Touya. The rest of Yusuke’s war bands were free to
leave, except the ice demon. Yusuke
faced their challenge with crossed arms and a snort. “Touya came with me
and he’s leaving with me. Anyone who
doesn’t like that can kiss my ass, right before they kiss their own goodbye.”
Trained and
prepared as they were, the Shinobi were not enough
force to take on this army. They gave a
valiant effort, but in the end, an elder called the Shinobi
to a halt and allowed Touya to leave, not unharmed,
but alive.
Unlike last
time, Jin didn’t make an appearance as the wounded were tended to, which wasn’t
such as bad thing as, other than many bumps and bruises; there were only two
serious wounds. The monk Hokushin had carried back suffered a badly mangled leg; it
was no surprise that Yusuke refused to let him continue in the search. Touya had defended
himself well; his only blunder came when a large, hairy mutant of a demon
clubbed him in the back of his head, adding to the already existing goose egg
complements of the late Risho. He was able to hold his act together leaving
the presence of his former Shinobi siblings, walking
out of the strong hold with a stiff, straight spine. If they knew how close he had been to passing
out they wouldn’t have given up so quickly.
“This is
very bad.” Touya
muttered, his voice slightly slurred. Genkai stood behind him, using her ki
to heal his wound; she wouldn’t be able to fix it entirely, only time and rest could
restore his equilibrium.
“Your wound?” Kurama asked, making sure to keep his voice low and his one
soft as possible, he was next to the old physic assisting her with his single
working hand. “It’s not quite that
bad. You’ll be able to balance yourself
properly by morning.”
“Not
that.” Touya
replied lifting his head from where it was cupped in the palms of his small
hands. “The only reason they let me go
today is because they are gathering their forces to take us on, that or warning
all the other sets. We need a drastic
move, I just don’t know where to.”
“Then we’ll
take them all on.” Yusuke declared from
across the room from where he was dabbing alcohol on a gash in his arm.
“The only
thing you should think about right now is sleep.” Genkai ordered, as
she expected, Yusuke started to argue.
“You’re not going to get anywhere if you don’t rest yourself first. Touya said himself he doesn’t know what move to take next
and that the Shinobi are likely regrouping. In the morning, when we can all think a bit
clearer will be the best plan of action.
It wouldn’t be such a bad idea either to get Jin’s help,-”
“He’s NOT
leaving this temple!” Yusuke growled.
“That’s not
what I was suggesting, Dimwit.” Genkai replied, clearly keeping her patience for her
successor’s ignorance. “Jin may have an
idea of where the Shinobi could have taken his
baby. Maybe they said something before
they drugged him that may have given him a clue. Either way I think it would be best if Jin
feels he has a part in the search.”
“Have you
spoken to him?” Kurama
asked hopefully.
Genkai shook her head, “No, granted I don’t know Jin as
well as the three of you I can still read him very well. He is, after all, just like Yusuke and lord
knows I’ve spent more than enough time with that dimwit.”
Kurama chuckled softly.
Yusuke, on the other hand, didn’t enjoy his mentor’s joke.
“Jin’s not
dim witted.” He snarled.
Genkai gifted Yusuke with a small smile. “Take Touya’s
example, Yusuke.” She nodded to the ice master,
who had fallen asleep at the table, his had buried underneath his arms muffling
his soft, purr-like snore. “And get some
rest.”
With that the old physic left.
Yusuke watched her go, going as far
as to lean forward until he was on his hands and knees, craning her neck to
watch her disappear. Amused, Kurama watched his friend’s antics with a soft smile on his
face. When the young demon was sure that
his mentor was not going to come back out, he stood and practically tiptoeing
he made his way to a small cupboard. Truthfully,
the fox had always wondered what was hidden in the antique cupboard, of course
since it was none of his business, so Kurama never
got the nosy urge to go searching through its treasures.
Apparently Yusuke didn’t share his
friend’s morals. It was also clear by
his action and body language that the young demon knew he wasn’t supposed to be
going through the cupboard. It took only
a few moments for Yusuke to find what he was searching for, the fox watched as
he pulled out a pack of cigarettes, opening it with the practiced ease of a
true smoker the young demon took out two cigarettes tucking one behind his ear
and the other between his lips.
“Let’s have a chat, Foxboy.” Yusuke
stood and headed for the door, giving Kurama no
choice but to follow. Once outside,
Yusuke settled on the temple steps and lit one of his cigarettes. The friends sat in silence for a few minutes
while Yusuke took deep, long drags off his cigarette getting the nicotine in
his system as fast a possible. All the
while he gazed off into the night, not initiating any sort of
conversation. Instantly after that one
was finished, Yusuke lit the next. This
one he meant to savor.
“I thought you quit.” Kurama said,
breaking the silence.
“Remember that night I stayed
over?” Yusuke asked, sliding his gaze
over and settling it on the fox’s lopsided shoulder. Seeing his friend nod he continued, “I
started about two months before that.”
“After how many
years?”
“Quit the day Genkai
died towards the end of the Dark Tournament.
I don’t smoke all the time, just on and off when I knew I could hide it
from Keiko.”
Kurama
left that comment alone. Yusuke
appreciated the gesture and showed his friend just how much by changing the
subject.
“How are your wounds?”
“They will be gone by morning.” Kurama promised.
“No kidding?” Yusuke asked, his voice completely surprised
yet not at all unbelieving. “How in the
world are you going to manage that?”
“Oh, I have my ways. I promise you, Yusuke, by morning I will be
completely healed, at your side, and ready to take on the entire Demonic World. OH,” the fox explained suddenly, “I can’t
believe I forgot to tell you! I’ve
gotten a hold of Hiei. He’s agreed to help search.
Yusuke visibly brightened. “Thanks awesome!” He sighed, his voice relaying his renewed
hopefulness, hardly containing his excitement.
“That Jagan Eye of his will really come in
handy.”
Kurama
nodded. “I wasn’t sure what was going on
with you, so Hiei decided to search alone for the
time being. If he finds anything, his will
let us know. He will be here sometime
tomorrow if he doesn’t hear otherwise from me.”
“You know,” Yusuke took a drag of his cigarette,
his expression thoughtful. “It felt so
weird not having you, Hiei or Kuwabara
with me today. I knew you were helping
anyway you could, but it felt odd, almost wrong. But now,”
“The whole Urameshi
team is back together.” Kurama finished his friend’s thought, his voice portraying
the pride he felt at that moment. “Just
look how much larger it is now,” Kurama motioned
to the temple, with all the monks and their friends asleep inside. “Now more than ever you are truly a force to
recon with. Had jin been in your nation, even with out you there, the
Shinobi wouldn’t have tried to abduct Jin.”
“Shit just happens.”
Kurama
knew that Yusuke hadn’t meant to further the conversation with that statement,
yet the fox saw the opening.
“Yes, Yusuke, things happen that we
simply can’t control. Sometimes our
choices, even those meticulously thought out; do not result in a satisfactory
conclusion. You are not to blame for
what happened. Neither is Jin. At least now you have a change to work
together to rectify this situation and get your child back.”
“Yea,” Yusuke agreed. He paused a moment before continuing. “You really need to take your own advice,
Fox-boy.”
“Pardon?” Kurama asked,
confused.
“Kurama,
shit happens. No one blames you for that
Bitch stealing the baby. So stop beating
yourself up.”
Flabbergasted, the fox sputtered
indigently making Yusuke snort with amusement.
It wasn’t often he had a change to fluster the usually completely
poised, and calm fox. After a moment his
amusement died, his voice turning serious.
“Come on, Fox-boy, admit it. You’ve been kicking yourself in the ass ever
since that bitch pinned you to the wall.”
“Am I that transparent?” Kurama muttered
with a hint of self loathing.
Yusuke turned, studying his
friend’s profile and judging his answer.
“To me, yes. It’s not something I
can see in your face, but I know its toiling around underneath all that pretty
red hair of yours.”
Kurama
smiled a true, deep smile. In a way he
was touched that Yusuke had recognized his thoughts and even through the
hellish events surrounding him, he still took it upon himself to try and sooth
his friend’s concerns. Kurama found himself wondering how in the world a reformed
thief like him deserved such a friend.
Lost in his thoughts, Kurama startled when
Yusuke gripped his arm gently.
“Thanks, Kurama.
For everything, I couldn’t have gotten through this with out you.”
“You are more than welcome,
Yusuke.” Kurama
smiled. “If you’ll excuse the cliché,
that’s truly what friends are for.”
With a soft squeeze, Yusuke released the fox’s
bicep. He flashed a tired, pained,
lopsided grin and left to seek out his bed for the few short hours he was given
to sleep. Kurama
watched his friend retreat, his words still ringing softly in his mind so
clearly that the fox could almost see them manifest in the air around him. Yusuke hadn’t needed it spelled out for him. He may be a buffoon, and a very passionate
one at that, but when came to those he loved, Yusuke had his lessons Aced. He could read his friends better than any
book. This, however, no longer, if it
ever did, include Keiko. Yusuke had
known that Kurama was beating himself up for letting Illeia kidnap his baby.
His mind set, the fox stood and left the temple.
Reaching his destination buried
deep within the wild, warded wood surrounding the temple, Kurama
stopped at a large, ancient tree. This
tree was almost as old as Youko himself. It took a bit of work as Kurama’s
body and ki were still centered on healing his
wounds, but soon Youko stood in front of the tree
feeling its life and stored ki shudder. The tree knew
why Youko was here and accepted its fate.
With a large, clawed hand Youko started stripping the bark from the tree. Once at the meat of the tree, sticky with
sap, he dug further; wounding the tree as his own body was. When the wound was large and horrific, yet
not life threatening to the tree, he stripped off his tunic and removed the
bandages from the sword wound. Angered,
his flesh started bleeding freely.
Swiping his hand over the wound, Kurama
gathered the warm, crimson blood, leaving the tree’s own blood, its sap, in its
place. He then rubbed his own blood into
the wounded tree. The reaction was
instant, starting at his fingertips; the old tree’s life ki
flowed into the fox.
Lowering himself to the ground
slowly, never breaking contact, Kurama leaned back
heavily against the tree’s large trunk.
By morning his wounds would be healed and the tree would be dead. In return of the tree’s gift of its life, Kurama would be awake and in the moment for the entire,
agonizingly painful healing.
It took hours, when the tree’s life
finally let out Kurama passed out. When he came back to himself, the fox
couldn’t tell if he had been asleep for seconds or hours. His entire body up to his neck was covered in
dead, browned leaves. He probably was
only asleep for minutes and no where near, but he was healed and prepared for
what was to come.
On his walk home the fox debated on
wither to stay as his sliver self. For
the moment in his life Kurama was content with being
his redheaded himself perhaps until his days ended. Truly this for was stronger admit didn’t
matter what he felt about it Yusuke needed him.
Perhaps it was for Yusuke alone would Youko
stay and give his one hundred and ten percent.
!@#$%^&*()
Jin awoke,
blinking into the predawn darkness. It took a moment for his mind to become
clear and remember just exactly he was.
A soft snore alerted Jin to the person sharing his mat and blanket.
Turning carefully to his side, Jin found Yusuke asleep beside him. As if on cue, Yusuke startled awake, holding
his hand up to look at the time on his violently buzzing cell phone. Looking over, he was surprised to find Jin’s
sky blue gaze focused directly on him.
“Hey.” Yusuke greeted, knuckling the sleep out of
his eyes and yawning deeply.
“Hey, yerself.” Jin answered.
“You’re
looking better.” Dropping his cell phone
beside him, Yusuke reached his hand out to press the inside of this wrist to
Jin’s smooth forehead. He was relieved
to find the skin at its normal temperature.
Turning the touch into a caress, Yusuke trailed his knuckles over Jin’s
brow and down his smooth, swollen cheek.
Jin sighed, leaning into the soft touch, his eyes still locked on
Yusuke.
“’Ow long ‘ave ya
been ‘ere?” Jin asked, his own hand
coming to rest on Yusuke’s wrist, holding his hand in place.
“Just a few hours ago.
Touya got clobbered pretty badly so me and Chu brought him back here. Ba-san convinced me
to take a nap until morning so we could pick both yours and Touya’s
brains on what step to take next. Touya said what would make it hard is that those bastards
could leave the baby tucked away in some god forsaken swamp or cave. Luckily, Kurama go
a hold of Hiei last night. His Jagan should
come in handy.”
“Or the
sky. . . “ Jin murmured to himself, hardly hearing
what Yusuke was saying as his mind raced.
He scrambled out of the covers and started pulling on some clothes.
“You have
an idea?” Yusuke asked, following Jin’s example he started pulling on his own
clothing.
“I jus
might.”
Jin and
Yusuke emerged together finding that most everyone were already up. Some were eating breakfast, a monk or two had
started meditating while the rest were discussing their options and plan of
action. Touya
was sitting at the low table where he had fallen asleep. There was an untouched cup of tea, long since
cooled, cupped in his small hands. His
pale yes were unfocused, every so often his thin lips worked along with the
thoughts running through his head.
“What’cha think’n?” Jin asked, settling down next to short
friend. Those pale eyes blinked once and
focused, not startling as Yusuke expected him to. His intense gaze slid over the Jin studying
his face for a long moment.
“I thought that
order came from somewhere close to where my home, obviously because you and I
were spotted. Now I’m not so sure.”
“Been think’n the same, I ‘ave.” Jin agreed, pausing when a plate of food was
placed in front of him. “Is yer Sensei still kicken?”
“Spinaci?” Touya shook his
head. “He died soon after I succeeded
him. What are you thinking?”
“They be need’n ta both train an’ hide
Baby ‘n they think Baby’s ours. Jus’
cause we flops donna mean they’d
give our Sensei’s ta boot.”
Touya nodded. “I see
your point. You think they may have
taken your baby to Estampe. It’s worth a try,
can you find your way to him still?
Other than you, only few elders know where to find him. Rumor says he lives in impossible terrain.”
“Is a fair shity climb. An’ far away. A full day flying there and
back, longer hoof’n it.”
“Puu’s got you covered.”
Yusuke spoke up from beside Jin.
The wind master had momentarily forgotten that they were surrounded by
other demons and humans. All of whom
were listening closely to the conversation between the two former Shinobi. “Just tell
him where to go and Puu’ll take as many as he can
carry.”
Jin shook
her head. “Ya canna try ta ‘splain
ta cliff maze.
Ya have ta go through the maze fighting the rogue currents. What ya ask s’impossible,
I’ll ‘ave ta go.”
“No.”
“Donna be unreasonable.” Jin
stated, anticipating the rejection of his plan before hand and ready with an
argument. “I be ta
only ‘um who knows where Estampe dwells. He hates company,
hardly suffered my ass around his cloistered sanctuary. If’n Illiea took Baby there, she’s long since hit ta trail.”
Yusuke
ground his teeth, glowering at the redheaded demon. When it came down to it, Yusuke’s consent was
the only one that mattered and he was still stubbornly opposed to letting Jin
back into the action. Jin’s sky blue
eyes were set with determination and locked onto Yusuke staring him down. All other eyes were locked on their dueling
gazes, holding their breaths.
“Fine,” Yusuke conceded. “Who’s gonna come
with us?”
“Us?” Hokushin asked?
“You’re going with Jin-san, Highness?
Don’t you think that you would be better served confronting the next Shinobi Set? Am I
being presumptuous thinking that is our next plan of action?”
“Let me get
Kurama to tell me what ‘presumptuous’ means and I’ll
get back to ya.”
“Highness,”
“I said I’m
going.” Yusuke stated firmly.
“There’s no
use fighting with him, Hokushin.” The deep, soft voice of Youko
stated from the door of the temple. Hokushin’s dark eyes followed the fox as he approached the
group around the table. He wasn’t the
only one; everyone was so startled to find the Youko
there that they all stared. “Yusuke
is overly protective as it is. With Jin
being the dam of his child and recovering from the attack there is no way you
can convince him other wise. Besides its not imperative that he come with us to confront the
next Set. Word of us is spreading
through the Shinobi like a wild fire; we have to find
an answer soon. This is our last chance
of a surprise visit and we need to plan it out properly.”
Yusuke
nodded his thanks to Kurama. “Right, who’s coming with us?”
!@#$%^&*()
It was dusk
by the time Puu landed back at the temple lawn. Lowering his large frame as low to the ground
as possible, he craned his long neck around to watch his riders, Jin, Yusuke, Shishiwakamaru and Suzuki dismount.
It had been
a gloomy and disheartening fly home from the mountains where Jin’s Sensei had
lived out the end of his days. They had
arrived at the hidden, plateau-like training ground just around noon. At
first Yusuke thought that Jin had actually gotten himself lost as Jin had not
said one word for the entire ride until it was time to guide Puu through the maze of mountaintops and told the bird to
land, in Yusuke’s opinion, rather suddenly.
The wind master, however, slid off Puu’s
broad, feathered back the instant he landed and made his way to a point in the
cliff where a large slab of the rock face seemed sunken into the side of the
mountain.
Upon seeing
the sunken door, Jin’s heart started a loud thud in his chest. Estampe had created
the door so that it would blend in perfectly with the side of the mountain; to
have that door out of place was a very bad sign. Gripping the hand-hold, Jin slid the door to
the side and entered with Yusuke following directly behind him. Shishi and Suzuki
stood guard outside the door, waiting and watching for any problems.
Yusuke
looked around with something akin to horror in his eyes. Jin had grown up here? It was nothing short of a tomb, instantly
making the young demon’s skin crawl and itches to back into the sun and air. The roof was hardly two inched above Jin’s
head and the hall, if you could call it that, was only wide enough for two
people to pass if they turned and shuffled sideways. There was notch in the
wall to the left the instant you walked in the door, it was large enough for a
person to kneel in and by the looks of it, was used for cooking. A bit further down there was another notch
that was covered by a curtain. Pulling
back the curtain, Jin reviled what looked to be closet bunks carved into the
rock wall. On the bottom bunk laid the
corpse of long since dead Estampe.
Jin stared down at his dead Sensei
with dispassionate eyes. “Came t’is whole way. All this Fuckin’ way.” He
spat. “For nothin’”
“No it wasn’t for nothing!” Yusuke turned to find Shishi
and Suzuki had left their post at the door to come see what they had
found. When Jin continued to glower at
the dusty corpse, his eyebrows furrowed into a deep frown. That didn’t stop Suzuki from continuing his
speech. “We
have found out that your mentor is dead and that there is no way your baby
could be kept in this,” he trailed off, looking about the enclosed space with
disgust, mirroring the others claustrophobic thoughts. “Tomb. This possibility is completely out of the
way, giving us the full opportunity to focus our expedition elsewhere.”
Both Shishiwakamaru
and Yusuke nodded their approval of Suzuki’s words even though Jin still had
yet to show if he paid them any mind.
After a moment Yusuke tugged on Jin’s arm.
“We have to at least get out of
this place. This guy’s been decaying for
god knows how long and that’s not good for your still healing wounds.”
Shishi
and Suzuki retreated, their relief obvious in their quick steps with Jin and
Yusuke not far behind. As they passed
the ‘kitchen notch’ Jin paused. Just in
time, Yusuke saw the wind master show flash of his temper. Grabbing a pan hanging on a hook screwed into
the stone wall, Jin drew back and with all his might and anger, he chucked the
pan at the clay oven succeeding in shattering it. It was the first form of emotion Jin had
shown in days, as much as Yusuke was upset that they had reached a complete
dead end, he was glad for it.
That brief tantrum was the last of
anything Jin showed. Reaching until the
moment they landed on the temple lawn. The
moment his feet hit the ground, Jin could feel his legs weakening and his knees
start buckling underneath his weight. As
much as he tired to hide it, his gut was aching something fierce and his gait
was turning back into a painful shuffle.
The doorway seemed to stretch out further and further away with each
step. With Yusuke beside him, forever at
his elbow, and their friends flanking them, Jin finally made it to the temple
door.
What they found on the other side
was the last thing they expected, and the worst thing they feared.
There was a pause when the door
opened, everyone in the main room went still, they all
have been too engrossed to notice the small group’s arrival. Botan rushed past
nearly running straight into Yusuke, her arms loaded down with various
ointments and bandages. She jerked to a
stop, lifting her large, pink eyes up to meet Yusuke’s concerned gaze. He
startled when he saw her tear stained cheeks and bloodshot eyes. She darted past them choking back a sob.
“What happened?”
“They were prepared for us.” To’o answered; he
seemed the most composed of the monks.
Wounded or not, all the monks were surrounding a single monk, laid out
on the floor. Beside him, Jin’s breath
caught, he and Yusuke both recognized the young, dead monk instantly. His name was Galt. Hokushin knelt at
Galt’s head murmuring the same ‘prayer for the soul’ over the deceased monk
that he had chanted over his lord Raizen only a few
years earlier.
Jin shuffled past aiming for a
small, rhythmically raising bundle of blanket.
Looking down, he found Rinku sound asleep. Up until that moment the wind master had
always seen Rinku as a fellow fighter, a very gifted
one for such a young age. Plus the boy’s
attitude and self assured nature made it very hard to see him otherwise. At
this moment, however, with mussed mousy brown hair, round baby fat cheeks
gleaming with ointment that covered a mass of bruises, his features soft with
the innocence of sleep, all Jin could see was a child.
“This has ta
stop.” He muttered.
“I agree.” Genkai announced. “You are not going to make any leeway just
confronting the Shinobi any longer. There is no longer the element of surprise to
work for you. We need to figure out
another-”
“No.”
Caught off guard, Genkai paused, along with everyone else. Even Hokushin paused his prayer chant to look up at Jin, his dark eyes
full of surprise.
“This is over. Done.”
“Jin,” Yusuke took a step toward
the taller demon, his concern growing. “You’re
not serious?”
“No more.” Jin shook his head, turning to face his
comrades. “We canna
keep this up. We tried and failed. If’n we pester them
too much they’ll do somethin’ drastic.”
Jin turned again, looking for Touya to support his thoughts. The short demon wouldn’t meet Jin’s gaze,
his pale eyes focused on a spot at the table.
The whole group had heard what the elder had told Touya,
and they left it to him to let Jin and Yusuke know, and not a one of them
envied him that obligation.
“We were told that the order was
given to destroy,” Touya sighed deeply, sollowing
around the dryness in his mouth. “To destroy Baby upon arrival to wherever Illeia
goes first.”
“I took the liberty of doubling the
search parties.” Hokushin said.
“Call ‘em
back.” Jin ordered, surprising the monk further “When I be
healed I’ll search alone.”
“Don’t be like that.” Yusuke pleaded. “Let us help you.”
“No, I ‘ave
ta do this on m’own.” With that Jin turned to leave. In his mind
was made up and the subject closed as far as he was concerned.
“Jin don’t!” Yusuke caught Jin’s arm.
“Don’t want?” Jin snapped, tearing his arm out of Yusuke’s
grasp.
“Don’t push me away.” He pleaded.
That made Jin pause, looking into
Yusuke’s large brown eyes and seeing his desperation and fear.
“The Shinboi
was all I knew. Livin’
in darkness is suffocatin when all ya can think bout is ta sun. I donna
want m’child growing up ta
lurk in ta shadows.
But, I want m’child alive. If’n we stop now
they may change their minds.”
With that Jin turned and left.
“That’s a bad sign.” Touya muttered.
“Why’s that?” Genkai asked.
“Jin never wanted to call his baby
’it’ or ‘the baby’. He called his baby
‘Baby’ and now he has stopped doing even that.”
“He is coming to terms with the
loss of his child.” Genkai
mused.
“Oh yea?” Yusuke asked, his voice raising a tad in his
ever growing anguish. “Well let me tell
you something. I’m not gonna let him give up!
If you guys wanna quit, I don’t blame
you. I don’t want to see any of you get
killed. But, I swear to you I will not
stop till I get our baby back, don’t any of you dare to give up on me!”
“As if we ever could. . .” Chu
murmured as Yusuke disappeared down the hall, getting a unison nod from
everyone around him. Despite Jin’s
outburst they knew that they could never stop searching for their comrade’s
lost child. Had the tides been turned
and it had been one of them needing help they knew that both Yusuke and Jin
would be by their sides doing whatever they could. In the morning they would all be ready to
start their search anew.
!@#$%^&*()
When Yusuke stepped into the bedroom
he found Jin standing at the window. The
wind master’s back was tense and straight, his arms crossed above his baby fat
pot belly. Most of the extra weight Jin
still carried in his stomach was pushed back slightly by the bandages, and not
as noticeable as it should be with the loose tunic Jin was wearing. His large eyes were unfocused as he stared
out into the trees. When he door clicked
closed on the other side of the room Jin started slightly and flicked his gaze
in his direction. After a moment his
eyes turned back to the darkening night sky.
“I’m not giving up, Jin.” Yusuke stated, not moving from in front of
the door. “So tell me where you want to
go and we’ll go. I’m not leaving you and
I’m sure as hell not about to give up on finding our baby.”
“Glad ta
‘ave ya abord.” Jin answered still staring out the window. He continued to keep to his own thoughts
until he felt Yusuke’s fingers ran through the short hair at the back of his
neck. When the touch became a firm rub
at the base of his neck, Jin tilted his chin down with a grateful sigh.
“God Jin,” Yusuke sighed letting
his head rest between the taller demon’s shoulder blades. “You have no idea how much I’ve missed you.”
“Sure I do.” Jin murmured back. “Cause I missed ya
jus as much.”
“Then why,” Yusuke fell silent, he
promised himself that he wouldn’t force an explanation from Jin until this
horrendous ordeal ended. But now, the
question was nagging him worse than ever.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Jin turned to face the dark haired
demon. Looking deep into the chocolate
brown eyes that captivated him time and again, even now when their passionate depths
were alight with pain and mirroring the miserable fear, Jin felt in the very
core of his soul.
“I dinna
know I was preggers til
after ya laft.” Jin answered; he had to tear his eyes away
from Yusuke’s gaze and focused on the corner across the room. “It dinna feel
right ‘aving ya gone. But, I knew that ya
watned yer life here. If’n it means anythin’, I decided ta find ya after it was born ‘n let ya
know.”
“Did you know it was a
possibility? I mean I never knew till
just a few days ago.”
“If’n I did, would it ‘ave made a
difference.”
“It might have then, but if your
asking me if I regret any of what we did together, including our baby, then the
answer is no. I regret leaving you for a
woman who treats me like a child and expects perfection. I regret having to sleep on the couch for the
past few months. I regret not being there to help you through your
pregnancy. But I could never regret our
baby.”
Yusuke noted that every time he
mentioned their baby Jin winced. Fisting
the neckline of Jin’s tunic he whispered firmly, pleadingly “Don’t give up on
me.”
“Never.” Jin breathed, saying the word as a much a
prayer as a promise. He needed one of Urameshi’s miracles right now. Flashing Jin a smile Yusuke tugged him
forward tilting his head up to brush a soft whisper of kiss on Jin’s lips. Pressing forward Jin re-caught the soft lips.
Instantly parting his lips he invited Yusuke’s tongue into a gentle dance.
Neither of them wanted to think, it
had been so much, so fast that they needed to be lost if only for this short
time.
Battle
roughened hands ran tenderly over the flesh of Jin’s arms feeling and remapping
the muscles he once knew so well. Moving
over the plains of his lover’s smooth back, Yusuke’s hands dipped under the hem
of his loose tunic. Both their eyes were
tightly shut, letting fingers explore as their tongues did much the same within
each other moist mouths. Keeping his hands
away from the stitches running down Jin’s stomach, feeling the rough fabric of
the bandages wrapped around his middle.
The muscles and flesh shivered delightfully under his exploring
touch. The tunic had come loose, giving
Yusuke free access; as if the shirt was acting as a chaperone to give
permission to a late night, after date, feel.
Those caressing finger aimed to tease Jin’s pert, responding nipples
only to freeze when Yusuke discovered the swollen mounds of Jin’s milk
glands. Had he been observant and aware
of the slight changes to his lover’s body, Yusuke may have already noted the
milk producing ability.
Breaking the heated kiss, he peered
down at the gleaming liquid seeping from Jin’s hardening nipples that was
covering his fingertips. Yusuke became
fascinated by the knowledge that Jin could lactate and nurse their child.
Jin groaned softly his head lolling
forward chin pressed to his chest watching Yusuke roll, press and lightly
squeeze his tightening nipples. At
first, his firm touch was painful, as his mammary glands have been producing
milk for a few days, starting just shy of a week before Jin had gone into labor;
with out Baby to nurse and properly drain the glands, they quickly got
engorged. Once the pressure in his chest
started decreasing, the pins and needles sensations started going away and a
quivering pleasure started growing in its place.
Yusuke had been enjoying the
panting gasps that Jin probably didn’t realize he was giving. He gave the slick nipples a soft pinch,
earning a moan for his actions. In
retaliation Jin grabbed the shorter demons dark, soft hair to claim his lips in
fierce, demanding kiss. Showing a bit of
dominance, Yusuke leaned forward pressing Jin’s shoulders against the wall and
took control of the kiss. Keeping one
hand on Jin’s muscular chest he ran the other down over the redhead’s hips to
slip under the waistband of his preferred loose fitting pants. Once there he cupped and kneed the firm
muscles of Jin’s rear.
A soft, involuntarily gasp escaped
Jin as Yusuke’s fingers, still milk slicked fingers started probing and rubbing
at the puckered opening. Inserting those
wicked fingers further, the young demon searched for the spot that would make
stars explode behind his lover’s closed lids.
He knew he found it went Jin’s mouth went slack and a deep moan rumbled
from his chest. Pulling away from the
sweet mouth he’d been devouring, Yusuke kissed a searing trail up the tense
lines of Jin’s neck until he reached a human shaped ear. After sucking on a soft lobe for a long
moment, he released it with a scrape of his fangs, his husky voice breathed in
his ear, “Turn around.”
Jin shivered, his heated body
suddenly cooled as Yusuke moved off just enough for him to turn and lean his
taller frame against the wall. Grasping
a thickly muscled thigh, Yusuke lifted and spread Jin’s legs, propping one on a
trunk that was situated under the window.
Wrapping an arm around Jin’s torso, he pulled Jin up from leaning
against the cool wall held him against the heated plains of his smooth, sweat
slicked chest. His fingers instant seeking out and going to work teasing a
stone hard nipple. The other hand snaked
around the redhead’s slender hips and fists Jin’s turgid erection, tugging
firmly.
As much as he tried to distract his
lover, it had still been months since Jin had anything other than a doctor’s examining
touch to his rear. A soft cry escaped
his throat when Yusuke’s stiff erection pressed into his body and with one
smooth, steady thrust impaled him completely.
His thrusts were slow, gentle strokes. Each one pressing against the
pleasure spot that made Jin’s body contract sharply around the cock bringing
him closer and closer to their pinnacle.
When the fist around his own swollen cock started stroking in time with
the stiff organ beating a tempo in his rear, Jin’s stuffed the fleshy part of
his fist in his mouth, biting down and strangling cry of completion. A moment later Yusuke’s mouth latched onto
Jin’s sweat slicked shoulder muffling his moan into the smooth, sweet flesh.
They stood spooning together with Jin
leaning heavily into Yusuke’s supportive arms as he panted and tried to regain
some strength as their breathing returned to normal. The afterglow that graced their faces was not
the blissful sort it once was; in this moment they both shared their
grief. The arms around Jin’s torso
tightened as his body started trembling.
Up until not Jin had buried his emotions, not wanting to believe that
the loss was truly happening; he wanted to believe in his friends and comrades,
but in moments like this it was proving too hard. His trembling reaching its peak, Jin heaved a
harsh, dry sob from the deepest pit of his despair.
Yusuke pressed his swollen lips to
the pulse below Jin’s ear. When he spoke his voice was tight and restrained but
still strong and determined on top of it all.
“We will get our baby back,
Jin. I swear I will not stop until Baby
is back in your arms. And if they hurt a
single hair on Baby’s head I will hunt everyone last one of them down and slaughter
them.”
Visibly gathering himself, Jin gave
one last shuddering sigh. He had his
moment and now he could cope and nodded.
With a gentle tug, Yusuke guided
his lover over to the mat they shared.
He was tempted to get a cloth from the bathroom to clean them off. Not really wanting to leave the room, or
loosing his scent on Jin, the young demon used his own tossed aside shit to
wipe them off. As Jin stretched himself
on the mat in a half daze, he didn’t fight the bone deep wiriness that
enveloped his entire being. With Yusuke
once again spooned against his back, one strong arm draped over his shoulder,
Jin instantly fell into a deep dreamless sleep.
