The questions started to fly, it was as if the quizmaster
decided to drop the medium difficulty questions and go straight to the hard
ones. The participants were dropping like flies. When it came to Nozomi she was
coolly answering her questions, even if she wasn’t sure of the answer.
Her confidence rose when she answered a remarkably hard
question that she hadn’t even studied for.
But as her confidence kept rising, she felt the mood of the
person sitting next to her lowering itself. Shuichi was answering as if he had
known the answers all his life and didn’t need to put any effort into
answering.
“Why are you doing this to yourself Shuichi?” she whispered
between questions.
“What would you do if the person you would risk your life
for just told you that she wanted nothing to do with you? I spent the last
seventeen years of my life mourning a death that never happened, only for that
person to turn around and tell me that she doesn’t want me,” he answered
between questions.
Nozomi felt Leto’s heart sink, but Nozomi’s
arrogance got the best of her and she was able to convince herself that he was
just trying to make her believe him. She convinced herself that he was up to
something, so she devoted the remainder of her energies to winning the game.
When Shuichi realized that his words had no effect on her he
gave up. The next time the quiz master asked Shuichi, without thinking Shuichi
got up and walked off saying “Potatoes,” not caring if the answer was correct
or not.
This confused Nozomi to no end, she
couldn’t see how he could do such a thing.
She watched him slowly walk down towards his friends and
stare into the distant abyss.
It confused and depressed her to no end, knowing that he
wasn’t even going to try.
And to make things worse, she started freaking out as to why
she was so depressed about his dropping out.
Things weren’t exactly working out the way she had planned.
She wasn’t able actually beat him the way she wanted to.
But she had beaten him.
But she wasn’t happy.
Why?
Nozomi needed some sort of gratification.
She was going to win.
Even if it was by default.
Who cared if her only real competition purposely dropped
out?
She certainly wasn’t going to.
But it still bothered her.
All she wanted was to push it to the back of her mind.
Forget about it.
If that was even possible.
Time passed and the competitors were dropping like flies.
But all she could concentrate on was the fact that Shuichi
dropped out.
Eventually it dawned upon her that there were no other
competitors standing, besides herself and she was being
crowned the winner.
But it wasn’t a fair fight.
She wasn’t able to enjoy it, besides the fact that she was
going to have her next entire school year paid for.
As she looked around, she noticed that Shuichi was nowhere
to be seen.
She wanted so badly to talk to him, so she attempted to use
her new found senses to reach out and find him.
Apparently he was still in the building, but she couldn’t
see him.
“Ok Shuichi, I give up. I need to talk to you, please,” she
whispered.
“Why?” a voice breathed on the back of her neck. She tried
to turn around, but her feet wouldn’t allow her to do so.
“Can we just go somewhere and talk,
just you and me?”
“Why?”
She could sense that he was trying to hold back his tears.
“I just want to talk things over, maybe clear a few things up. I am not saying
I want to start a relationship, but I want to understand where YOU are coming
from, not where your demon is. I want to get to know you.”
“Meet me at Namiki, tomorrow
around 1400.”
“But isn’t that place always so buisy?”
She asked turning around to find no one behind her. “Should I go?”
