Despite their worries, they both lasted well into the evening. Introductions went well, and so did dinner. By the time they had all had something to eat, the sun had set over the shoreline down the way hours ago, and Salem had turned on outside lights.
“Wicked barbie skills there, Sha,” Chu said, raising his flask across the table.
She was pleasantly light-headed by that time, and raised her current beer in a return salute.
“Seriously, this was great man,” Yusuke added.
“You learn a few things when you have little to work with.”
“Which is why we usually go to her when we run out of food,” Sukuna said, getting a nod of agreement from Kitsu.
“Much to my annoyance.”
“In any case, I’d marry ya,” Chu said with a laugh.
“Ya’d chase anything with tits, Biggie,” Jin said while the others laughed as well.
“This is true.”
“Anyway, you’ve gotten to know us,” Toya interrupted, “so it’s only fair we get to know you four as well.”
“Alright,” Hyouga answered. “Ask away.”
“We can start easy. What sort of demons are you? Are you pure or a mix?”
Kitsu tugged on her white-tipped orange ears poking from the top of her head, through her dark violet wavy hair. “Pure fox here.”
Sukuna pulled webbing from under her black-painted fingernails with a bright smile. “I’m actually a spider-type.”
Hyouga also tugged on an ear poking from her lavender hair. “I’m a mutt in two senses. Half dog, half ice elemental.”
Sha stood from her chair, though it didn’t add anything to her height. She stepped away and held up the black reptilian tail emerging from a specially made hole in her pants. “Guess you can call me a mutt as well. Half fire elemental, hence the red bangs, and half dragon, hence the tail.”
“Now that’s interesting,” Jin said as she sat back down a little heavier than she intended. “Don’t see many dragons off of Ryukai.”
“Don’t see many half-breeds either,” Chu added.
“They find it repulsive,” Sha explained. “Half-breeds get the short end of the stick with a lot, and dragons are prideful creatures. If your blood is tainted with something else, they won’t accept you. Hell, most of the time you’ll get killed. Not much you can do about it since your power can’t even match half of theirs, no matter how hard you try.” She shook her head. “Anyway, what else would you like to know?”
“How long have you been in the detective gig?” Chu asked.
“About three years now, give or take. A few months before the tournament out here.”
“Why would Koenma pick demons this time around?”
“Given the track record of the last three humans, it was actually Yama who stepped in and assigned us,” Hyouga answered. “No offense, Yusuke.”
“None taken,” he answered. “I was a shitty detective. So what’s keeping you on for so long?”
“Probation, honestly,” Kitsu said. “That and it’s a pretty easy way to get paid.”
“Still can’t believe yours pays.”
“We do catch a lot of bounties. There are a few cases that don’t pay, but they’re typically easy.”
“Easy when you have a half dragon on your squad,” Sukuna piped up.
Sha said a curse in the same foreign, hissing language Salem and Hiei had heard before.
“Love you, too.”
“What’s bad about that?” Jin asked. “If ya don’t mind us askin’.”
Sha sighed and sat forward, noticing a swirl in her vision. “My blood makes me a little more… violent than the others. The cases are usually a great way to get it out. Moving on from that though.”
“Actually, one about something I was wondering,” Chu said. “I had a few run-ins with those in your guild. I heard that you were hunting down their killer. Do you know what happened to a bloke named Sven?”
Sha went quiet immediately. Hyouga took over. “He didn’t make it.”
“Sorry to hear that. Great guy, that one.”
Sha got up from the table, leaving her beer behind and picking up her rapier. She gave a curt apology, vanishing into the night.
She vaguely registered a shift in the music volume. Only when she reached the sand did she feel a change in equilibrium. She finally took note she was far away from the house when the water sounded next to her.
She took off her shoes and stumbled while pulling her pants legs up. She was indifferent to the cold at that point. She followed the shoreline as far as she could until she hit another cove, a decent distance away from the house. She kicked at the water a bit and followed it into a cavern, trying to steady her mind once again. It refused to cooperate through her thick haze. All her limbs felt sluggish, and her mind felt like her decisions were slowed with goo. She took in a deep breath, giving one more try to regulating her mind.
“You’ve wandered a bit far.”
She didn’t even jump at the rumble she heard off to her side. “What do you care?”
“You’re the one that roped me in to staying. By you leaving, I have all rights to follow suit.”
She hummed and stumbled back slightly, reaching behind her as she backed towards a rock large enough to sit on. “I can see your logic. Though why follow me instead of retreating to your room?”
“I know the area. You don’t. You’re still needed for this mission while I am not.”
“I suppose that makes sense.” She looked at him, seeing him stumble as well as he took a few steps forward. “Why worry though?”
“You’re the lead detective for those insufferable females. You can’t go missing right before breaking a case.”
She smiled. “I see your reasoning. But you still owe me a fight.”
He laughed a bit. “We can wait until we’re sober.”
“What fun is in that?” She drew her rapier, pointing it at him and taking a defensive, yet off-balanced stance. “I know you have your sword with you.”
He drew his weapon, holding it at the ready. “Don’t blame me if you get run through.”
“I won’t.”
They didn’t even bother to assess the other’s weak spots. They remembered from earlier where exactly to strike. However, they also knew where to dodge. Their strikes were not laced with malice in the slightest. They quickly lost their motivation, but kept trying, laughing with each strike. Neither could pinpoint what was so funny. They were both laughing at nothing.
They both drove their weapons into the sand when they realized neither was in fighting conditions.
“Are you too drunk as well?” she asked, sitting in the sand.
“It would seem so.” He sat a few inches away. “I blame you.”
She feigned offense. “Really now? I didn’t say pound down shots. I merely said to get drunk.”
“You didn’t say when to stop.”
“That’s your call. It’s your heart you need to silence, not mine.”
He saw her face fall neutral very minutely. “You’re lying. Your whole demeanor changed when Chu brought up that name.”
“You had to be observant, huh?”
“It’s kept me alive.” His vision rocked in front of him, his mind so cloudy he wasn’t sure if he was speaking in reality or a dream. “Who was Sven?”
The alcohol also had an effect on her. She was more comfortable where she was in the cavern, and who she was with. “Sven was the reason I hunted down the assassin.” She stretched, closing her eyes for a moment against the spins. “The assassin slaughtered my entire group. The last one he killed was the one I had mated with. Sven was a dragon, a full one. He helped me fit in with our thief’s guild. He was the last to die, while I was allowed to survive.” She faced him. “Spar with me.”
“You are just trying to keep your mind busy, aren’t you?”
“Just indulge me, please.”
He went easy on her, mostly due to his drunken haze. He could barely stand as it was, let alone concentrate on dealing blows. They both dodged and countered, never landing a serious blow. He flipped her around onto her back, straddling her to keep her down to the sand. Both needed a moment while the world stopped spinning.
As she regained her senses, she noticed her eyes were closed and she wasn’t pulling in as heavy of breaths. She felt her arms raise, hooking on to something as her heart hammered.
He knew he was kissing her. He hadn’t expected it to happen. One moment he was fighting her, the next he had her pinned to the ground, her blood welling up under claws that had extended from his own nailbeds. The alcohol made it feel so right. She was exerting so much power under him it was adding to his intoxication. He went to pull off as he slowly started to regain control of his self, but she held him in place.
“I said I’d indulge you,” she muttered before they let the alcohol take over again.
He snarled over her as her nails dug into his skin, driving him on. He felt her legs hook over his hips, letting him press against her with ease. “You’re okay with here?”
“You think I care?” She pressed her lips back to him, only to feel him pull back a few seconds later.
“Sha, we’re both drunk.”
“And full of tension.” She didn’t have to hide her sharpened fangs. “Don’t tell me you’re a bitch.”
He rose to the threat, hissing at her, feeling his teeth actually ache. “Watch yourself, woman.”
“Or what?” Her voice dropped to a lustful growl. She dragged a sharp nail over her arm, seeing his attention drawn to the smell that rose up. “You can’t deny it. You want to give in to the bloodlust same as me.”
His eyes rolled back as he groaned at the smell. “Fuck…” He grew weak and latched on to the wound, his mind sinking permanently at the copper pang.
She leaned her head back as she felt his teeth pierce the skin of her arm. She groaned loudly, wishing he would do more to her. It had been forever since she had done anything. She was surprised to feel foreign flesh held against her lips. She kissed the flesh before sinking her teeth into it. She was rewarded with a louder moan from him.
She felt the metallic tang hit her tongue, eliciting a moan from her chest.
Their lips met again in near-ferocity. The bloodlust mixed with the alcohol made them writhe against each other, seeking some sort of release. He slipped his hand under her shirt, barely registering the raised flesh from where he cut her earlier.
Something met his ears, forcing him away from her. “Did you hear that?”
“Just heard you.” The sound met her ears as well, forcing her to groan and lean her head back in the sand. “Damn it…”
“Sha! Where the hell are you?”
“I’m going to slit their throats when they sleep.”
He laughed softly, shaking his head and leaning back. “Maybe it’s for the best.”
“I guess you’re right.” She let out a heavy sigh. “I’m still thinking of slitting their throats.”
“Sha!”
She growled as she leaned up on her elbows. “What do you think? Let them search a little longer?”
“Long enough to clear off.”
She wiped at her mouth, looking at the off-colored red that transferred to her arm. Her hazy head finally let her register what almost happened. “Hope you don’t think I’m too forward.”
“Not exactly.” He stood and offered her his hand to get up. “Bloodlust is strong when you haven’t given in for a long time. Alcohol doesn’t help that.”
“Might have to stay away from it the rest of the time I’m around here then.” She straightened her shirt, noticing it still hiked up.
“Probably a good idea.” He tilted his head as they heard the voices getting closer. “You should get to your friends before they panic.”
She nodded. “Yeah.” She took a few steps away to pluck her rapier from the sand. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry. I know you’re not ready to move on.”
“I’m just as responsible for my actions. I offered my blood just as you did.”
“Still.” She put her sword in its sheath. “Even if it was just something we needed with no strings attached, it is soon.”
“Strings?”
She let out a soft laugh. “No expectations of a relationship. Once the mission is over, we part ways.” She cringed as the voices sounded about thirty feet off. “Though I have to say, by what I felt on you, we’re both missing out.”
He almost laughed at her bravado as she left the cavern, calling for her friends. He watched her disappear into the night. “No strings, huh?”
