Yu Yu Hakusho: Rise
Chapter 9
Sitting up had been your challenge; one that you were determined to master again. You may have been cheating using a wooden beam behind your back but you knew you’d get there eventually. Whatever had laid you this low, you really hoped it never happened again. Being completely reliant on the generosity of others wasn’t sitting very easily in your mind.
What helped was the fact that you weren’t alone in your frustration. Yomi’s son, Shura, was quite frustrated at the moment. Though for completely different reasons than you. Considering that he was lobbying one attack right after the next at you and nothing was effective, the young demon’s pride was on the line whereas yours was coupled with dignity.
“Just break already!” Shura yelled out at your barrier.
Your spirit energy was around you like a thin mist, floating and shifting in the light. There were twinges of sensations you’d never felt in there. It felt familiar and yet like a stranger to you. That alone was paradoxical. The magenta energy had found a way to leave thin shimmering wisps of itself in your aura. You had no clue how it had gotten there. It certainly wasn’t from the boy. That would have been purified and converted long before leaving a trace on your spirit just like all of his other attacks. No…the strange new addition had to be from something else.
“Would you like to try again tomorrow?” You asked the young demon kindly, staring directly at him.
He looked so familiar. It was a bizarre feeling. Just like the magenta wisps that had infiltrated your normally silvery-gray energy, this boy was both familiar and foreign. Beyond the scope of your recovery time of course.
“No!” Shura said stubbornly as he readied another attack.
You nodded gently in acceptance. It wasn’t like absorbing his energy was taxing. If anything it was more beneficial. You could just see the emotions swirling around with frustration in his movements. No matter how many times he tried to pierce the purifying cloud your energy had forced, he could not.
Fear prickled in your chest as you registered movement. You were able to dodge out of the way in time. Shura’s well placed spin kick demolished the beam you’d been leaning on. Dodging was putting your movements in a kind light. You’d kind of forced yourself to fall over in order to avoid getting hit.
The wood felt hard and forgiving as you turned onto your side, trying to push yourself up. It was a feeble attempt with all of your atrophied muscles. You reached out with one hand, sending out a wave of energy that pushed Shura out into the courtyard, burnt from head to toe as you attacked everything that made him a demon without putting in enough force to kill him. As his body hit the stone path, letting him slip into blissful unconsciousness, the pillar by you made another terrifying sound.
It was falling. The broken top piece was skidding from where Shura had demolished it. The sharp, jagged wood promised to land pointy side down where your thighs currently were.
Fear.
Shura was safe. You’d pushed him into an open space on purpose. Too bad you couldn’t do that for yourself.
Suddenly the world moved so quickly it took your breath away. You were being held in strong arms in the courtyard as well. And the beam didn’t fall; which was a good thing as it would have unbalanced the building, causing great damage to the roof and raised walkway.
As you readjusted you realized a couple of things things. One - you were back in Yomi’s arms. A place that had become more and more familiar as you felt with your recovery. Secondly, he was bending down to make sure he could grab Shura. You supposed it was a measure just incase the building decided to destabilize itself despite what had stopped it from collapsing a moment ago.
And lastly, the near by plants were what stopped the beam from falling. The bush that had beam near by showed some amazingly rapid growth as it practically turned into a tree with the goal of struggling the current beam so that it could replace it.
Your breath caught in your throat as your lips parted.
Now that you recognized. The only confusing thing was that the magenta energy infused in the plants was the same that had threaded itself into your own. Now that there was more of it you could even fill the humanity of it. Last you knew, Youko Kurama’s energy was of a different composition altogether. And yet….
“Prepare yourself dear, an old friend has finally decided to join us,” Yomi said smoothly.
What an odd thing to say.
“She’s never been your dear, Yomi.”
Your stomach clenched. Kurama. That sounded like him yet different. Softer, lighter, kinder even. The footsteps sounded off. Namely that there were footsteps for you to hear. Still something in your gut kept you in suspense. When you saw a red headed human in light brown trousers you were utterly confused. Even as he looked directly at you, you had a hard time matching up what you could feel in your soul with all of the sensory evidence before you.
“Perhaps not in the past,” Yomi returned with acknowledgement.
The red headed, green eyed enigma didn’t seem to enjoy that statement. Yomi stood back up, holding you with one arm behind your back and another under your thighs, as easily as he would have even had he not been holding you.
“Nor in the future.”
“I believe that’s her choice, wouldn’t you say Shuuichi?”
