Chapter 1: How It Began
***
Where exactly did this story begin? Perhaps it was in the weeks when demons and humans fought side by side against the worst that both worlds had to offer. Perhaps it was the day when a demon offered his death to heal his human mother, or the moment when a young detective staked his life on a criminal’s loyalty; perhaps, indeed, it was the day when three thieves joined forces against the Spirit World. Or it could be that the true beginning lies a thousand years in the past, when a demon hunting humans to eat fell in love with one instead. Like all things, the shape of this story was a long time in growing; however, the point when its final form was unveiled is quite clear. Let us begin, then, on the day that Sensui Shinobu died.
Hiei lay panting in the blood-soaked Makai dirt, the fox on one side and the orange haired oaf on the other. This was not how he’d envisioned his return to his homeworld, and it brought him no joy. Yusuke’s sacrifice had had the effect he intended on his teammates. For a while the three of them had had the most power of all their lives; now they were beat up, bloody and sprawled in the dirt while a deranged human with a martyr complex sneered at them from his tacky golden helmet.
“I am merciful. I want to relieve you of your misery.” Smarmy greaseball. If he really wanted to relieve Hiei’s so-called misery he could keel over on his sword. He didn’t care about mercy – Yusuke, his friend, was dead; he would either avenge him, or join him. There was no other choice.
The madman suddenly broke off his tirade and spun towards the portal, just as a massive blast of youki surged out of it. But that was impossible – there were no demons in the human world more powerful than himself and Kurama, or his Jagan would have picked them up. And that youki wasn’t fading … it was no ordinary high-class demon creating this, the power was in the range of a full-fledged Demon Lord. Hiei’s first reaction was a simple one: run. When a demon that powerful walked the earth, all lesser beings got out of its way.
And then, as his companions hauled themselves upright to stare in that youki’s direction, came the next impossibility. A voice carried to them on the wind: “I’m sorry I got delayed – traffic was a bitch.” It couldn’t be! They’d all seen him fall … hadn’t they? “But I’m back, and I’m ready to finish this!” A great bird with Puu’s blue feathers landed before them, and a familiar figure stepped down from its back.
Hiei stared awestruck at this earthshaking being wearing his friend’s skin. “Is … that him?”
“I don’t know,” Kurama whispered.
The being walked forward. “Some friends you are, ditchin’ a guy and then hogging the bad guys all to yourselves. I gotta admit I’m disappointed in you jerks. But did you honestly think I’d just lie there and let you guys fight my battles for me? Gimme a break.”
Both the demons sat frozen, locked between competing emotions. Instincts screamed, a Demon Lord is angry at me – I am so dead! And at the same time, it is Yusuke, he’s alive! But how? They left Kuwabara to ask the stupid question.
“Yeah, I can’t explain that,” Yusuke said. “In fact, my ticker’s still not ticking. I guess I should be worried, huh?” His nonchalant confusion at this detail was too much, and both Hiei and Kurama burst out laughing.
“You’ll get used to that,” the fox said. “You see, demon hearts don’t beat in the conventional human sense.”
The redhead predictably flipped out at this. “Demon!?” Honestly, didn’t the oaf remember who he was courting?
At that point Koenma – and just what was he doing in the Makai? – walked up and explained about Yusuke’s Mazoku ancestor. That did explain a lot, and with that much power coming out of him there was no doubt exactly which Mazoku his ancestor was. The Toushin Raizen.
Hiei felt his youki returning at dizzying speed, as if Yusuke had summoned it with his presence. “I had no idea you were one of us, Yusuke. How does it feel to be so superior?” To most demons as well as humans, he didn’t add.
“Honestly? I don’t really feel all that different …” Yusuke’s youki flared higher as he prepared to attack. It was all part of his charm, that he was able to joke with his friends and then utter death threats without changing tone. “… So how about it, Sensui – ready to feed some worms?”
“Back off, Yusuke.” Hiei got to his feet, youki blazing. “We’re in the middle of something, and I’ve suddenly discovered my second wind.”
“No, Hiei, I will take him.” Kurama was on his feet too.
“What is this, a prom date dispute?” Oblivious to how close his comment was to the truth, Yusuke brushed them both aside. “I appreciate your help but I need to finish this alone. You dig?”
Those eyes, so calmly, warmly ferocious. Hiei felt a flame ignite in the pit of his stomach, curling up to his throat. He pointed. “Knock’em dead, Yusuke Urameshi. But if you fail, know I’ve got your back.”
“You certainly aren’t wasting time declaring your intentions,” he heard through his Jagan.
“Shut up, fox. You want him too, don’t deny it.”
“I don’t.” It was the demon way; when a Demon Lord went looking for companions – friends, allies, lovers, whatever – lesser demons would trample over each other to impress him with their power. Hiei and Kurama had done just that out of instinct, and Yusuke had instinctively recognized and acknowledged it. He would give them his trust and confidence, and they would give him their loyalty. Or else, and that was also the demon way. “He favors both of us, I don’t think he realizes how much. Shall we share him?”
“Kinky fox,” Hiei sent back. “Kuso!” Yusuke had just fired his rei gun, obliterating a small mountain in the process. “When can I go head to head with that?”
“Now who’s kinky?” He could see the fox’s smirk. “You know he’ll go back to the Ningenkai.”
“Hn.” The Dragon was starting to take its toll on Hiei, so he didn’t say what he was thinking – that Yusuke would be back in the Makai as soon as Raizen finally bought it. Who knew, maybe the shock of having an heir would do him in. And the elder Mazoku was not standing idly by. The Jagan showed him that Raizen suddenly took over Yusuke’s body and transformed it to his demon form.
His. Demon. Form. Hiei shivered. He caught a stray thought from Kurama, something like, good thing these clothes are loose, Kuwabara would faint and fall off Puu. An appealing idea, but his mind was on the fight. The Mazoku fired a rei gun that would live in Hiei’s fantasies for decades, then his hair went brown as Raizen left him and he shouted at Sensui to dodge. Through the dark of his oncoming hibernation, he heard Yusuke complaining about someone else finishing his fight. Just what a demon prince would say … just what Yusuke would say, too … “Only Yusuke would want to keep fighting someone who’s already dead. Wake me when it’s over.” And then the darkness pulled him under.

Jagan: best. plot device. ever.
Most of the spoken lines in this chapter are from episode 92 of the anime, which inspired this whole story … the look on Hiei’s face when Yusuke shows up is priceless. ^^
Next chapter: we jump ahead to the demon tournament, as our two lust-struck demons act out a bit of conspiracy.
