"What's the catch?" the jaganshi growled, sensing that there was
something the two were not telling him. "There's a risk you haven't
mentioned."
"The body cannot exist without the mind. If you fail to accomplish your
goal while inside his mind, Kurama's body will eventually go into shock, and
he will die, Hiei."
For the last hour, those words had troubled Hiei's thoughts. Yukina had
insisted he rest before making any attempts at repairing Kurama's
subconscious, so thatcoulcould be fully prepared and able to the the task
that lay ahead of him. However, he was unable to close his eyes for
any amount of extended time because of this weighing down his conscience.
He had to save Kurama. He would never forgive himself if the kitsune
slipped into death because of his own stubborn attitude and unwillingness to
forgive. Hiei sighed, then untied the bandanna covering his Jagan. Botan
and Koenma told him he had a day's time before they were forced to collect.
Alright, Kurama. I'm coming, Hiei thought as he knelt near the
fox's bedside and opened the third eye.
***
Yusuke lazily stretched out in his bed, comfortable next to the warm
presence of a very naked Keiko lying beside him, snug in the
blankets. It felt good...no, it felt right to have her back in his
arms again after waiting so long. Together, the two of them had fucked up
their chances of happiness years ago, and her stubborn attitude had landed
her in an obviously unhappy marriage. But now, there was a chance of
redemption staring the two of them in the face.
Yusuke was so enraptured by the gentle and steady rise and fall of her
chest, and way that the light played across her long chestnut tresses, that
he hardly noticed her eyelids had parted and that she peered up at him.
"What are you doing?" she whispered softly, reaching up a hand to cup his
cheek against her palm.
"Marveling over how perfect you are," he answered honestly. "Keiko, you
aren't going back, are you?" Yusuke asked impulsively,
deeply troubled by the thoughts of her returning to a man she hadn't truly
wished to marry. Her silence was answer enough for the hanyou to sit up
completely on one elbow and glare at her with disbelieving eyes. "You're
unhappy! Dammit, Keiko, wasn't last night enough?"
She blinked, brown eyes shimmering close to the verge of shedding tears.
She smiled weakly at him and gave a faint shake of her head. "Of course it
was, Yusuke. I was only wondering what I would say to my parents. I would
never leave you now."
Relief flooded his heart. The embrace that he drew her into was nearly
crushing, and she squirmed against his chest, full bosom bare and pressing
against his muscular torso. "Let's go to Makai, Keiko. We can be happier there."
"Makai? Yusuke, it's...the demon world. How could we ever have a good life there? I would be frightened every moment of my life. When I was
around them during the Dark Tournament, it wasn't quite so frightening,
because so many of them were weak and unable to hurt us, or frightened to.
But you said the Makai demons were so much stronger." She shuddered
involuntarily at the thought of living amongst demons and apparitions for the
rest of her life.
"I'll protect you. I wouldn't let anyone hurt you. I'm a ruler there,
Keiko. I'd kick anyone's ass who looked at you wrong. I mean sure...everything there isn't as great as it is here, but you'd be treated like a queen." Yusuke sighed, as memories of their first argument concerning the Makai resurfaced. "If you don't want to leave Ningenkai, then I understand."
He turned from her and stared out the window, while silence fell between
the couple. He was surprised by the light pressure of her palms against his
shoulders, kneading and rubbing the tense muscle. "Yusuke? I've made my
decision," she murmured, leaning in close and hugging him from behind, full
breasts pressing against his bare back. "I know you say that you can
protect me, and that I would be treated like a queen, but I can't help but
feel weary of what could happen. I am only a human...I don't think that I
should live there with you."
He felt like his world had ended. "I underst--" he began to say,
heavy-hearted.
"But I will, because I can't let you go again."
Yusuke turned, surprised etched clearly on his face. He had expected the
big let down, and a few apologies from his lover, not for her to concede and
agree to come with her. The toushin embraced his lover, claiming her mouth
in another passionate kiss. Her slender arms were raised to wrap around his
muscular torso, tears sprinkling her cheeks and glistening as they left wet
trails. Never again would he let her go, nor would he allow anyone in the
Makai to hurt or threaten the one he loved most. Nothing else mattered, but
that moment, and the future ahead of them. Again, the couple lay down
amongst the sheets of Yusuke's bed, their past forgotten, their reunion
completed.
All of it was thanks to one thing. One horrific tragedy had begun to
knit together the fragile shattered pieces of their former friendship.
Wherever Kuwabara was right now, Yusuke prayed his friend was at peace and
that he too, was happy.
"See! Everything's going to be fine. The shrimp won't fail," Kuwabara
boasted loudly inside Koenma's office as the three of them observed the
somber events. Hiei had just removed his bandanna, and was attempting to
link his own mind within the subconscious of his former kitsune lover.
Botan and Koenma exchanged doubtful stares, before their gazes returned to
the large flat screen television occupying the prince's office wall. "He's
too stubborn to ever fail, anyway. Kurama's going to be fine, and then everybody
will be smiling and happy again," the orange-haired spirit boasted, proud of
his accomplishments as a ghost.
He failed in regaining the Artifacts, he failed in defeating Sensui
with the others, he failed in defeating Mukuro, oh let's not forget his
death at Shigure's hand during the tragic draw that claimed both of their
lives. If we hadn't delayed collection and given Mukuro time to heal
them... Over the years, Koenma had broken many rules in order to
safeguard the lives of the humans and youkai he had gradually begun to call
his friends. Besides, Botan would never forgive him if he had allowed them
to die without at least giving each of them a second chance. It was her
that prompted him to make the decision he now weighed with a heavy heart.
"Kuwabara," he cleared his throat, sending a glance Botan's way. The
blue-haired guide nodded her head affirmatively, and Koenma continued,
foreseeing the argument with his father already concerning the choice he had
decided to make. "I've called you to discuss the terms of your afterlife
again. Your week is to end soon, and I'll have no choice but to close your
case."
"I know," he admitted. "But I've got no regrets, so if you've got to
send me somewhere, its okay with me."
Koenma paused again, hazel eyes glancing up from the surface of his desk
to focus on the spirit standing before it. "I don't have to send you
anywhere, Kuwabara. Over the years, you've given service to Reikai several
times. Some were of your own free will, and others weren't, but that can be
overlooked because the sum total of your good will and deeds is what
matters. As judge of the Gate of Decisions, only my father and He who
reigns above us has the power to offer you this choice."
"What choice?" Kuwabara asked suspiciously, squinted eyes narrowing at
the brown-haired teen.
"You may choose between Heaven, or a duty that will give you a
semi-corporal shape when needed, and a physical form in Reikai only. After
several decades of service, its quite possible you may earn a human shape
for the ningenkai as well."
"Oh no, I'm not going to be a spirit detective again," Kuwabara groaned
out, assuming the worst. During his time as a tantei, he and his friends
had shared tears, laughter, good and bad times, but it was not something he
wanted to spend a supposedly peaceful afterlife doing!
"Not that, you idiot! I'm offering you the chance to be a Guardian
Angel. An honor given to very few." That meet the qualifications.
Never mind that the necessary recommendation came from my own wife. Dad is
going to kill me.
"I'm going to be an angel?" Kuwabara asked in disbelief.
"That's right!" Botan responded cheerfully as she leaned down to give
Koenma a tight hug. "If you choose to, that is. You've displayed amazing
abilities, and a selflessness that few humans possess, Kuwabara, especially
at your age. You died protecting someone, and have been nearly killed dozens of
times while in the service of Reikai. You prefer to risk yourself for the
sake of others, and ensure that those around you are happy and safe. Your
loyalty and bravery know no compare. All of these are amazing and rare
qualities that qualify you for such a role."
"Me? A guardian angel?" He continued to stare at the prince and
princess of Reikai. Apparently, he found difficulty in believing their words.
His reaction caused Botan to giggle and lightly shove Koenma in the
shoulder to begin explaining his duties.
"A guardian angel is fairly different than a Heaven angel. You won't be
restricted to Heaven, but you will have to follow Reikai guidelines. All
guardians start with a half dozen souls to watch over, so you'll need to
choose six people, of course, and you will receive a minor link to eachrsonrson. In times of serious distress, danger, or trouble, you'll feel a tug
in their direction to--"
"Yukina, Shizuru, Yusuke, Keiko, Kurama, and Hiei," he responded, almost
automatically.
"Human souls, Kuwabara. Only three of them were--"
"You said half a dozen souls. You never said six humans," Kuwabara
retorted. Koenma's face practically fell to his desk, and he sighed,
turning to glance up at Botan who only gave him an innocent smile.
"You did say six souls, Koenma." the princess murmured.
Dad's going to kill me.
***
Yukina darted back and forth through the main room of the temple.
Several letters had poured in from the Makai, requesting permin ton to dwell
in the shrine that hecomecome a sanctuary for peaceful youkai. This was the
first time that she would receive new tenants without Kuwabara being present
to sort out the good from the bad and to protect her should any prove to be
violent. Her older brother was in the bedroom with Kurama, but she had
observed him in his meditative and trance-like state. Her knowledge
regarding jagans was very little, and she feared the worst could occur if he
were interrupted or jarred out of his current state.
Or what if he couldn't be brought out of unconsciousness from any
outside force? What if her brother was an actual sitting duck in the other
room? What could she possibly do, merely being an ice princess with no offensive
talent, and minor defensive capabilities against Makai demons with possibly
harmful intent. Usually, she not only had Kuwabara's protection during
their arrival, but his heightened spirit sense and awareness as well. Now,
she had simply had her own instinct and could only hope that the youkai who
claimed to be peaceful, truly were calm and gentle souls like herself.
Of course, she would have never agreed had their letters come after
Kazuma's death. The letters she received all came prior to the loss of the
ex-tantei. She had tried to contact Yusuke by phone, but he answered none
of her calls throughout the morning and afternoon, worrying her even more.
Were it not for her brother's current state, she would have left the ne
ne
to look for the ex-detective. She had also hoped Hiei would be awake by the
time they arrived, but for several hours, she had observed him sitting there,
eyes closed and unmoving; there was only the gentle movement of his chest,
indicating the breath drawn in and out of his lungs.
Darkness fell, and she knew to expect the youkai's arrival soon, now that
they could travel under the cover of night. It was against the law for anything
but the smallest imp to move in broad daylight, unless it was a demon with
completely humanoid features like she and her brother.
Clean sheets were on every bed, fresh food was in the oven, and water was
boiling on the stove for tea. A knocking sound at the door announced the
arrival of the refugees, and she hurried over to it to slide the doors open
and allow their entrance. The demons that had crossed over were in various
states of youkai appearance. Some were horned, others scaled, some tailed,
many with unusual hair and eye colors. Some had odd builds, some were as
weak and frail as she was. Some had sweet smiles, while others appeared
cunning and ruthless, frightening and intimidating.
"Konnichiwa. Yoroshiku," she greeted them with a smile, stepping aside
as they all walked in. "I'm glad that all of you made it safely, dinner
will be finished shortly."
A few demons gave her a shy smile. The two biggest ones, standing tall
in the rear of the group glared at her with such open dislike and disgust
that she wanted to quiver and shake where she stood, memories of the Toguro
brothers returning. I shall not be scared, I shall be brave and make
Kazuma-san and my oniisan proud.
"Thank you for allowing me to travel here on such short notice,
Yukina-san," one of the smallest and meeker youkai thanked her. She beamed
at him. "Everyone is welcome to the shrine as long as they are peaceful."
The two larger youkai exchanged glances, licking their chops. "So,
where's the ex-tantei you mentioned in your replies, girl?" They were large
fellows, each standing at least nine feet tall. Their fists were like
bricks, huge and meaty, attached to thick wrists and brawny arms that were
roped and corded with bulging tendon. Their tusked mouths were filled with
sharp fangs and razor-sharp teeth. Obviously, they were meat eaters, and
judging from way way that they stared at her, and those youkai around her,
they were not disgusted with cannibalism and actually seemed eager to meet
the "ex-tantei." That meant they were also human-eaters.
"Not here at the moment," she murmured, and although it pained her to
lie, she added, "But he will return soon. He departed briefly to complete
some errands." She couldn't reveal Hiei's weakened state to these demons.
Especially when she had no idea if some of them were hostile and not to be
trusted.
That was a concern that became apparent rather quickly. They sneered at
her, and one advanced while the second of the pair loped towards the door
leading to the rest of the temple.
"No! You must not go that way!" she called. "The way to the dorms is
that direction, through that door."
"I'd rather look and see what's in here instead," he growled in a voice
that quickly bled free of any respect for her. The little girl was alone,
and the shrine was theirs to ransack. He felt no signature belonging to
any humans, although there was a powerful and rather intriguing presence
leading away from that hallway. Once they finished with the shrine and its
demons, they planned to overrun Tokyo. Screw the treaty, no one could force
them to obey the stupid laws Enki had set, now that a new Emperor was in
place and had yet to make any new decree. If they were lucky, their actions
would reach the ears of Emperor Gaishaki and action would be taken to
break off the truce with Reikai. And all of Makai would have them to thank
for it!
"No!" Yukina cried again, darting out of the main hall and through the
doorway. She moved to attempt to bar his path, and to block him and prevent
his reaching Hiei. A mere slap was enough to send her out of his way, where
she fell to the floor, clutching her bruised cheek, marked with the print of
his hand.
Behind her, she heard the cries of the other youkai as they attempted to
fight off the hostile predator among them. The truly peaceful ones, were
struggling to protect themselves, using their only defenses to ward him off.
One used the advantage of its excellent speed to blur away and leave the
premises, while those not gifted with amazing speed were captured.
There were several types of youkai in the Makai. Among them, were
natural predators, and their prey, the demons that spent their entire lives
running and hiding beneath rocks, under and behind bushes, and fleeing for
their safety. They had come here for a fresh start, to find a life where
they could be free of the terror of fearing their death could be around any
corner.
"Stop!" Yukina cried as she crawled to her feet. The demon kicked in the
door and entered, pausing dead in his tracks to stare at his find. The
koorime had scurried in behind him, freezing the ground to almost unbearably
low temperatures. She had so few defensive skills, and her offense was
practically nonexistent. "Go away!" the petite koorime continued to scream.
"Go away!" She could do nothing but panic, her worst fears had come true
when he once again knocked her aside, and hauled Kurama out of bed, taking
both the unconscious fox and her meditative brother with him.
Her tears clattered to the ground. Her own pain and injuries could be
ignored, but it was fear for the safety and well-being of two of the people
that mattered most to her, that caused her to shed hiruiseki. She had
already lost Kazuma-san, and now these brutes may even take her brother from
her, when it had taken so long to find him.
"Nooo!" she screamed, running after him.
"Look what I've found, brother," the first youkai said as he tossed down
both Kurama and Hiei. "Both unconscious. Recognize 'em? It's Kurama and
Hiei."
"Shit, it is. They'll be a lot tastier than these shrimps," he gloated,
carelessly slinging away a tiny slip of a female youkai, who took the chance
at escape and fled. "And we'll be able to gloat that we killed 'em! The
whole of Makai will envy us."
As Yukina went to run forward again, a calm suddenly settled over her.
It was as if a reassuring hand had been placed on both of her shoulders,
telling her not to worry. I can stop them. I'm strong, I can make them
leave my oniisan and Kurama alone. It's my turn to save him, she
thought, crimson eyes flashing with the closest feeling to anger that she
had ever shown. She would not let them harm Hiei in this weak and fragile
state.
That warm presence, so loving and kind, continued to reassure her.
Yukina lifted her chin, and stared at the two demons, eyes flashing pale
blue as the room temperature drastically began to drop, lowering past the
freezing point. Icicles formed on the ceilings, and slick glistening spots
of ice covered areas of the floor. "You must leave," she repeated firmly.
She didn't know why she felt so strong, so brave, so uncharacteristically
sure of herself. Could it be her fear, and the urge to protect her
defenseless sibling and his mate, or was it something else giving her the
courage to stand up to the two bullies that had intruded within the
sanctity of Genkai's shrine?
"Or what will you do? Make us shiver to death? Bwahahaha!" The duo
laughed at her, but the laughter came to an uncomfortable stop when Yukina's
formerly crimson orbs glowed with faint blue color, and a cloud of icy cold
hovered above them, coalescing from the chill of the frozen room. "I don't
like that look she's got, we better stop her, brother," the one youkai said,
uncertainty on his grotesque features. His brother agreed, and they
dropped their defenseless captives to approach Yukina.
I can do this. I am stronI'mI'm not alone. I have the power to
protect my brother. In the Glacier, elders had often taught younger Koorime girls minor offensive abilities to protect them, but Yukina had neglected hers for years, in order to focus on her healing powers instead. She could only hope that her faint memories did not fail her now.
"Tengoku no Shinju!" Yukina cried, raising both small
hands. Icy pearls, bearing similarity to her hiruiseki, rained down from
the cloud, striking the approaching demons, and causing thick ice to to
appear everywhere they touched. The tiny freezing orbs caused no harm
to the violent pair, but the two were frozen in place, unable to budge from
the spot in which she had bound them with her ice powers.
The presence, that had felt like hands resting on her shoulders
disappeared, though the warmth remained in her heart. A familiar presence
lingered near her, and although she knew she was alone, aside from the
unconscious forms of Hiei and Kurama, and both frozen youkai, it felt as if
someone had gently caressed her cheek.
"Kazuma-san?" she whispered. When silence greeted her, she sighed gently
and walked to the doorway to call out into the surrounding area. It was
safe for the other youkai to return now, and Yukina had never felt more
proud of herself than she had right now; she had finally returned to Hiei
what he had done for her in helping rescue her from Tarukane. She had saved
her brother, and she had done it on her own.
Tengoku no Shinju: Pearls of Heaven
Thank you Reviewers.
A/N: Do the Kuwabara fans see why he had to die now? And, Kuwabara
haters can kiss my rump. I do like the character very much, :o and wish others could see what makes him such a great person. (Even if his voice is really annoying....)
About Yukina's attack, I've read in one of the OAVs, she really does use that :o
About the six souls to be guarded by Kuwabara: Shizuru and Keiko are human. Yusuke's soul was originally human, so for the sake of this fic, his soul still is, while his body is half youkai due to the change that occurred during his second death. Kurama is a kitsune soul in a human body, while the other two are completely youkai in every way.
I had intended to write a Yusuke/Keiko lemon, the inspiration fled rather
quickly and I preferred to move on with the story rather than linger and
write a possibly bad lemon. The opportunity to write one may appear later,
and should I get the mood to do so, I'll write one for the het fans. So
sorry. I can't bear to write a lemon if my heart isn't fully in it, and it
would have continued to slow me down if I had tried. I may go back later
and write one, and if I do, I'll make sure to note it in the summary line.
(Spoiler) Ataure: Kurama's not 300 years old. It's a bit of a plot
hole. Episode 100 (I think that was the number) reveals that Kurama's been
here for a thousand years. Hence the title 'The thousand years meeting'.
He and Yomi meet and speak, and you find out details of the past between
Youko Kurama and Yomi. Forget any reference to Kurama being 300 that you
saw in the Ankoku, ok? Its been a while since I saw it in Japanese, so I'm
not certain if it was a translation error (blame it all on Funimation!) or
if it was an actual plothole. When I see it again, I'll listen to the
ending narration and see if they mention his age.
