Chapter One: Poisoned Thick air hung over the plains of the Makai, adding to the additional waves of thunder that bled through the atmosphere. Everything was cast in a sickening shade of gray and smelt of decaying matter. Unpleasant would be the most accurate descriptive illustration of the state of the Makai on this particular day. Thankfully, this mission was predicted to be a relatively short procedure. Kurama heaved a sigh and recalculated the division of his personal task. Though the ‘spirit detectives’ have been disbanded for a number of years, he remained willing to perform miniscule tasks for Koenma. On this ‘adventure’ he was instructed to deliver a message to Yusuke, the successor of Lord Raizen. If anything, these small tasks gave Kurama entry into the Makai for visiting purposes for old friends; Hiei became the successor for Mukuro. And due to current circumstances, illegal access to the Makai has never been more difficult. These visits were typically brief, but enjoyable, nonetheless. After walking a distance of miles, Kurama took rest amidst an opening in a cluster of trees. The idea of feeling threatened by his surroundings was an irrelevant thought. Despite leaving behind his identity of ‘Youko Kurama,’ he stilled retained much of his strength that was practiced during the height of his fighting career. Shuffling through the leather carrying sack that was brought along, Kurama retrieved a canteen of water for his thirst. While pouring the liquid into the make shift ‘cup,’ he pondered the contents of the message he was delivering. Reaching into his inside jacket pocket, he look the letter out and held it up to the grey sky in a vain, yet nonchalant, effort to read through the paper. Being satisfied with this ‘attempt’ he placed the letter back into his jacket pocket for safe keeping and rested him head against the trunk of a large tree and closed his eyes. The Makai always offered the loudest silences; unable to separate the seldom strikes of lightening from the far away calls and howls of lower level demons. Rest would not be an easy option. With this conclusion, he willed himself to his feet and cursed the reasoning of the portal being so far from Yusuke’s Territory. He assumed himself to be located near the border of Hiei’s territory, judging by his calculations of the distance left until he crossed into the desert environment, which was the best characterization for the land Yusuke had jurisdiction of. After walking another couple miles, changing his pace from a steady walk to more of a quick trot, in order to save daylight and time. The placement of the portal just seemed completely ridiculous at this moment, such a distance between the point of arrival and the planned destination. The air was cooling now, as the dank sunlight that filtered through the clouds dissipated and twilight settled atop the trees. Kurama suddenly slowed his pace. The amount of time to make his destination wasn’t adding up, there was no possible way the border of Yusuke’s territory could have been more than a few miles from where he started off. Kurama questioned if his sense of direction had failed him, the confusion this brought was overbearing and exhausting. In slight frustration, he stood in place and thought deeply about his current situation and the options that were at his disposal. Only at this intense point of concentration did Kurama notice a hardly audible noise coming from the trees. Unlike the typical noisy silence of the Makai, it couldn’t be placed. It was barely existent, but becoming louder; was he losing his mind? Without warning, the sound of snapping branches cut through the smoldering silence of the forest. Instinct took hold and Kurama whipped his body towards the direction of the sound. ‘Most probably a low level demon,’ thought Kurama. ‘Misjudging my human form for an actual human… oblivious to the concept of auras.’ An eerie silence followed the abrupt noise, there was complete stillness. Whoever this opponent was, they were beating around the bush. With the already substantial delay of being unaware with his current location and daylight seeping away quickly, there was little time for such squandering . “Show yourself,” Kurama said calmly. He waited. For the sake of precaution, Kurama reached back into his mane of hair and readied himself to draw out his rose whip, but felt a swift pain in his shoulder. He drew back his arm and grabbed the source of pain but held himself back from crying out in surprise, despite the pained expressed that was evident on his face. He felt the area of his wound and felt a foreign instrument protruding from the injury. He gripped it firmly and torn the object from the muscle and quickly examined it; a dart? Kurama’s hand visibly shook as he let the dart drop to the ground. His nerves were experiencing unexpected trauma from whatever was laced onto that dart. As the dart hit the ground, a silhouette of a demon jumped down from the trees gracefully. Kurama had little time to react, the ‘drug’ had slowed down his reaction time and a sense of double vision sickness began to set in. ‘This isn’t any random attack, I've been being followed,’ thought Kurama, stricken with a sense of worry. His body was useless if he couldn’t even see straight. “Why are you doing this?” Kurama bit out, straining his voice, while still grasping the pain in his shoulder. “It’s not every day I catch a pretty little human wandering deep in the forests of the Makai,” the demon chuckled, stepping into the light. The youkai had a solid foot of height on Kurama, and was clad in tattered garments with lengthy, brown, greasy hair. “Initially, the plan was to simply rob you…but seeing ‘what’ you are forces me to re-think my own motives. ” Kurama’s eyes widened when he realized the situation that was present. The demon was mediocre in strength, but with physical handicap the demon set onto him, the outcome of this was yet to be determined. Kurama made haste and reached back into his mane of hair and pulled from it a seed. As he shouted ‘rose whip,’ the actual plant was slow to materialize. He pulled his movements back in order to project the whip to his energy, but by now his nervous system had become almost completely numb, resulting in slow and sloppy movements. “So you have a few tricks up your sleeve?” The demon sneered at Kurama’s attempt to form useful plant weapons. “What is it you injected me with? I can hardly feel-,” Kurama was cut off by the force of the youkai running fully into him, pinning him to a large trunk by grabbing his shoulders for leverage. Kurama’s head whiplashed against the trunk from the force and resulted in more painful lightheadedness. Prime instinct took hold of Kurama, he winced though the pain and focused his energy enough to push the unwanted youkai a few inches from him, and slip out of the iron clad grasp. The small sense of success from escaping the hold was diminished when a hand crudely grabbed his scalp of crimson hair and pulled him to the ground. The fight was a struggle, but ultimately ended when Kurama lost consciousness from both the effects of the drug, as well as blunt trauma to the head. A/N: After digging through pages upon pages of fanfiction, I have seldom found Yomi/Kurama. I strongly believe that should change.
